that aren't infested with megasuperstores, drivers know how to drive, doesn't typically get too hot, milder winters, much more culturally diverse than most of the U.S. - and mostly without the racism. I love the pubs, both the night-oriented ones and the day oriented ones that you'll find on the side of a canal somewhere. Where you can get a pint and go sit on a river bank and watch the ships trundle by. I like the lack of social uptightness you find here, religious, sexual, drugs, etc.

27. I went to England in 1995 |
|
We toured Manchester and the Lake District and the northern border. To this day it is my favorite foreign country I ever visited. I remember how beautiful the countryside was, and I was so amazed by how old things were there - everywhere you went there was a stone circle or a fairy castle sitting up on a nearby hill, and the gravestones in the village graveyards dated back 800 years. I was just so impressed by the sense of gravity and age and history there (we don't have that here in the US really). And I loved the rain and mist and the "greenness" of everything - everything seemed magic all the time because of the weather. I even liked the food! Just thinking of how lovely and wonderful England was makes me nostalgic for that trip.

34. Too many things to mention: |
|
the mystery novels, the many fine television dramas and comedies, the English cathedral choir repertoire, the accents, and when I was on my one visit there many years ago, the delightful discovery that English people are not stuffy and inhibited, as the stereotype goes, but friendly and funny.
Today is a very sad day.
