Wow! Michelle Wie is the real deal.

She shot a 1 under par today! There aren't a lot of people on the planet who can break par on a course during a PGA event. Then you consider that she is a 15 year old girl, and wow. Just wow.

1. But but but the guys on Pardon The Interruption

(a sports talk cable show) predicted that she wouldn't make the cut because the course will be "foreign" to her. They also felt it wasn't fair that she was getting all the invites while people like Annika Sorenstan were getting all the LPGA victories.

3. Don't Get Too Far Ahead Of Things

If the weather is good, LOTS of folks can go low. If she has a 5 hole meltdown, she could still miss the cut.

Like i said in my other post, Michelle has not yet learned to weather the storm when the swing goes a little out of synch. Going out of synch happens to EVERY golfer, no matter how good. When she goes out of synch, the wheels fall off. She'll learn to grind it out and weather the storm, but she hasn't yet.

I'm not rooting against her or anything. I'd like to see her make the cut. But, a good first round is not a guarantee of much on a tournament course.

2. I Thought She Turned 16

Not disagreeing. That's seriously good golf. I know an assistant pro who got comped at that course. He said it's most difficult from the tips, and that's where the play the tournament from.

Her only problem right now is that she's not got the edges rounded off her game, so when she gets a flat tire, all the wheels fall off. She hasn't learned to grind it out yet. That is either a completely natural gift or is learned over time. At 16, she has plenty of time to learn.

Example for the non-golfers out there: Tiger won the Masters this year, not because he hit the ball better. On Sunday, at least three guys in the top 10 had a better day striking the ball. But, he knows how to score even when he's not sharp. Michelle needs to learn how to do that. But, she very likely will.

4. ESPN keeps saying she's 15.

She could be 35 and it would still be impressive. And I think that you are absolutely dead on with your analysis -- though I really can't think of ANY 15 (or 16) year old who doesn't get overly frustrated with themself.
