Breast Implants - For or Against them?
I'm watching a rerun of Seinfeld. It's one of the better ones with Teri Hatcher where Jerry and Elaine are trying to figure out if Teri Hatcher has real or fake breasts. When Elaine says she saw them and they're fake, Jerry decides to breakup with the woman.

So guys (or girls), what's your thoughts on breast implants. Mind you, I'm talking about those that are done just for the hell of it. I do realize that there are many women out there who get them because of issues with Breast Cancer and I have no issue with that.

What's your thoughts?

1. If a woman does it for herself, why not?
Personally, I'm against body alteration--I wouldn't get a tatoo or piercing--but if somebody wants to alter their body, why the hell not?

I mean, really. They're all procedures that electively alter the appearance of one's body.

I still don't see a difference. Body alteration is body alteration. What about branding? Is that acceptable, but breast augmentation isn't? I don't think so. Again, I'm personally against all of it: tatoos, piercings, brandings, fake boobs, et al.

I had a coworker from another job who had a breast reduction. She had horrible back problems from the size of her breasts and had some of the same complaints that you discussed. Reducing 2 cup sizes did wonders for her back problems

6. I think they're stupid!
I can't think of any valid reason for having them. People put too much emphasis on body image.

My girlfriend had a double mastectomy before she was 30. She never even considered implants. She said it was great to be able to sleep comfortably on her stomach.

So, no, I don't like them.

18. Neither "For" nor "Against"
I can honestly say - I've seen some breast jobs that look good and some that don't. Sometimes they can compliment a girls figure, other times they are just overkill.

However, if you asked me what I find more visually appealing - I would take nice fake ones over floppy heavy-hanging real ones any day.

There's a reason they are popular, and it ain't cuz guys don't like the look of perky firm breasts.

Again, here on DU - it would make sense that most people would take the anti cosmetic surgery position down the line.

For me, I can appreciate a nice set of fake breasts, but it certainly is NOT a deal maker / breaker.

Personally, I like slim athletic, petite girls - and I would much prefer small nice natural breasts to giant fake ones. But moderate sized fake ones can look good too.

22. From someone who has too much of the real thing,
I don't understand why any woman would want to add big boobs to her discomfort just to attract a man. Now as far as fashion is concerned, putting those little silicone things in your bra works pretty good and looks natural, not like the bobby sox and Kleenex women used in my day. However, if a woman really wants them, by all means do as much research as you can about this because it is a very serious change and could be medically dangerous. Other than that go for it.

23. The ugliest thing in the world...
all of these surgeons should be put into prison for cultural perversion and a complete lack of any ability and taste.
It's just so damned ugly. It looks so artificial. Being short-sighted, I bet I recognize these pumped up plastic-ballons from 10 miles withouth wearing glasses. How can a woman make a kind of mixture between a sex-doll bought in a pornshop and a human being out of herself. How could Demi Moore do this to herself? She was so beautifull before. Who wants to touch this??? Arrghhh...
I've only seen one exception: a girl, who really suffered because of her breasts, and she didn't want to have xxl breasts or whatever. She was really beautifull and she suffered. I'm not obsessed with accepting what nature has judged us to be, but these XXL plastic ballons. I gitt.
Hello from Germany,

24. I think it's too bad so many women think they need them
but hell, if you really want 'em, go for it. I think the ones that look like watermelons are grotesque, but to each his own.

I'd certainly be upset if a daughter of mine was getting silicone boobies, but the saline ones are relatively innocuous. What bothers me is that for years, plastic surgeons classified small breasts as a "deformity." Now, that's tacky.

If it makes you feel better about yourself, what the hey. I'm glad I couldn't afford it when I was younger, though - I was so self-conscious and unconfident that I probably would have done it, and no doubt I'd be regretting it now. I no longer have any desire to be a DD. I'm quite happy with a B-cup, thanks. At least I don't have back trouble, and I don't tie 'em behind my waist like my busty big sisters.

27. Absolutely against
Women who get implants for cosmetic reasons need counseling and mental assistance, not surgery. If a woman is so self concious and has such low self-esteem that she feels surgical mutilation is the only way to "improve", then she has problems that need to be addressed by a competent mental health professional.

Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 08:15 PM by Vitruvius
they have no medical benefit. In addition, they interfere with medical X-rays, including for breast cancer screening. I think implants should be illegal, except for women who have had a mastectomy.

IMHO, all breasts are beautiful in their natural state. And implants are an unnecessary risk and expense that offers no medical or aesthetic benefit.

32. They seem self-indulgent
Basically if you've got all the money in the world to improve your outerself, you should donate it to charity and improve your inner self. That's what really matters in life, strengthening your soul. Outer beauty is so fleeting, work out, eat right and try to keep your body healthy, but cosmetic surgery, unless its corrective, is just self-indulgent and narcissistic.

Plus, I have a friend who got boobs and she complained alot about the after pain. She looked good after, but it made her EVEN MORE self-absorbed than she already was, if that was possible. It makes me wonder how they are going to deal with life's eventual aging process, are they going to be 65 and wrinkled but with incredible boobs?!?! If so, how strange will that look? Also some celebrities with their face lifts have their skin pulled so tight, such as Michael Douglas and Burt Reynolds, it looks so bad. I think Melanie Griffith is starting to look strange as well as Marie Osmond. Clint Eastwood aged badly, but Robert Redford looks good.

if her implants cause health problems for her, like arthritis, lupus, or other associated diseases?

Haven't you guys seen or read about the women who are dealing with silicone leakage in their bodies? It deforms their whole bodies. Can't see where it's even worth it.

I know many implants are saline now, but there are still health issues.

And if I remember correctly, the FDA just ruled that silicone implants can again be used.

Natural is safe and better.

To quote a song I heard recently...

"I want my sister free to burn her burka, not to lie awake at night counting how many pounds she has to loose."

All women are beautiful. No women need to change the way they look for anyone.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is butchery, plain and simple. It is a torture commited upon humanity for no reason other than vanity. Vanity, the sin of those peopel who are not wise wnough to realize that true beauty is inside. No amount of silicone is ever going to make what is most important more beautiful. ever.

I'm 100% pro-choice on such personal issues, so if a woman wants them, by golly she has the right to go out and get them. But I have rarely seen an instance where they make a woman's breasts more attractive. Fake boobs are definitely a turn-off.

54. they usually look nice, but it's her choice
It's easy for me to say, "I would never get implants," when I naturally have huge ta-tas for my size. We have the technology, so why shouldn't a woman have her body look the way she wants it to look? My understanding is that doing it for cosmetic reasons is far safer than doing it as reconstructive surgery, and no one here would stand in the way of a woman getting reconstructive surgery, because we know if reconstructive surgery was not available, a great many women simply would not get mammograms, regular check-ups, let alone chemo/mastectomy because they would rather die than look freakish. Having looked freakish as a child, I completely sympathize with this point of view. We live in a visual society, this world is extremely cruel to women who are physically unattractive, and if someone doesn't want to live that way, why should they be forced to when there is an alternative? To people who say implants look fake, it makes me wonder if you automatically assume that any well-endowed woman who is not overweight looks "fake?" A friend has told me that strangers just assume that my endowment is fake, and I don't necessarily appreciate such judgements. If you want big ones to ride high after 40, you've got to work your pecs -- I didn't get this way "naturally," I worked out to get it. Is surgery less natural than lifting weights? They are both technologies, developed over time, to change our body profiles. If you think big breasts look tacky, and a surprising number of people do, fine, but plenty of other people don't, and you just can't please everyone...so each woman ultimately has to please herself.

As far as the poster who said, every woman is beautiful and it is inner beauty that matters, come on. We women do have mirrors, and as a child I personally always found it an insult to my intelligence to be told of inner beauty when what I needed was to have my face repaired. The concept of inner beauty seems to me to be a form of snobbery, of congratulating ourselves on our superiority because we can see something that the common run of the herd can't see.

As far as the person who thought that women who get implants should give the money to charity because they have too much money...whoa! You can get a set for $4,000, and your surgeon can arrange for you to borrow the money if need be. We are not talking about a sum of money that would put anyone through college. For many young women, it's a career move -- they make a LOT more in tips with bigger hooters. And as far as real jobs go, it has already been proven many times that better-looking people get faster promotions and bigger salaries over time. So the money could be seen as an investment.

The main reason I would be leery of getting implants is that the saline implants go pfoof after a decade or so, so one day you are going to wake up flat (maybe even just one on side) and maybe need a replacement at an inconvenient time. That would make me stop and ponder.

But I certainly want the right to choose my own cosmetic procedures, so I am not going to jump on another woman for choosing implants. If we have the technology but are afraid to use it to improve our lives, we might as well not have it.
