I had a reoccurring dream last night, what does it mean?

This is the second time that I have had this dream. Both dreams did involve slightly different subplots, but a major part of both dreams involved a tornado, being outside and running from the tornado, and finding refuge in my grandmother's (which she had shared with my grandfather until he died last year)house. I was as I am now in both dreams. I live a long distance away from my grandmother. What does it mean?

16. Well, growing up

My parents were unstable young adults. Luckily, my sister and I spent a lot of time at both of our grandparents' houses. I believed that my granparents really cared more about our own self intersts than our parents and were more accepting of us being ourselves.

not often, but at times.

Basically, it means that someone close to you - whether it be a family member or friend - is acting in an unpredictable manner.

13. My husband is somewhat unpredictable

He is depressed and seems to get sad or apathetic for apparently no reason. Nearly everyone who I know in this area seems to act somewhat unpredictable and unstable, or is it just me.

9. I have had a reoccurring tornado dream since childhood...

...and I've been told (by a couple of psychotherapists) that a tornado represents a state of mind---stressed, out-of-control, chaotic, fearful.

If you're dreaming about tornadoes--possibly you are experiencing stress and some situations that are beyond your control.

Your grandmother---what does she represent to you? Comfort? Security? Safety?

It sounds like you're searching for some stability and comfort--during a time in your life when you may feel a bit unsteady. Does that fit for you?

Also--I think it's a VERY good sign that you are escaping the tornado, taking control and finding a good, safe place for yourself. That could represent something in your current life. Are you being really proactive about a chaotic problem?

I think this is a good dream. You're finding refuge.

In many of my tornado dreams, it's sucking me in and I can't get out. Sometimes it's worse. When I'm doing well in life, I conquer the tornado. However, when I'm stressed--I fear it and run from it.

Your handling of the tornado is very positive!

10. That fits with me

I dislike my job. I don't feel like part of this community that I have lived in for the past 3 years. My husband has been unemployed for over a year and is depressed and sometimes "difficult". I've developed an eating disorder. These things all seem out of control.
Yes, I am in therapy and attending a support group. I am trying to figure out ways to deal with the other problems as well.
I am glad that the dream sounds positive to you. I hope that I do find good enough refuge in life.

I think mine were due to a relative with Alzheimer's.

12. Could be a "push" from your subconscious...

...if perhaps you are in a personal situation that deep down you know is bad, but are reluctant to change it. The tornado is your wake-up call to get moving and make the changes you need.

Or, I could be full of shit. :)

But seriously, I had a recurring cataclysmic dream for a couple of years while in a deteriorating marriage: after I got divorced, no more dream.

17. My suggestions:

Dealing with a tornado indicates a subject over which you have no control. Any sort of natural disaster would symbolize that same kind of lack of control. So based just on that element, I would say that you are feeling a lack of control in either one or many parts of your life. Since a tornado happens to be a very quick form of destruction, rather than another form of disaster, I would think perhaps you are looking at this factor of control with an eye toward impatience. It's something you hope subconsciously won't last very long.

Other people in our dreams are supposed to represent parts of ourselves and not really other people. Perhaps there is a portion of yourself in some inherited way that makes you think of yourself as your grandmother. Sometimes, it could simply be the color of your hair, eyes, or so forth, or it could be in a characteristic that is reminiscent of her. (For instance, I have my grandmother's stubbornness!) Houses or buildings represent our minds for the most part, as in new rooms often mean the opening up of new feelings, emotions or thoughts. It appears to me that you are trying to hide yourself from a situation which you feel is disruptive in your life, and are hoping that it is transient. So you are retreating, perhaps, to a time in your life where you were younger, and where you didn't NEED control, that others possibly took care of you instead. If this is a situation that is not transient and to which you must respond, it seems like you are trying desperately to escape from having that responsibility anyhow.
