1. How about . . .
the new Eels and/or the new Mountain Goats. Generally acoustic, very eclectic, but not too folky.

11. Just listened to Everyone Is Here today
I loved it at first, but it REALLY hit me today! It is a wonderful pop album. And Neil's solo stuff is just as good.

18. You have excellent taste.
Although I'm not as big a fan of Tim Finn as I am of Neil Finn, I thing Everyone is Here is still amazing. Especially Part of You Part of Me and Gentle Hum. Hearing Neil sing that live put shivers up and down my spine.

7. Get an Etta Baker CD
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 03:25 PM by Richardo

The latest one (only her third) is with Taj Mahal.

Piedmont blues on acoustic guitar, all instrumental.

Etta is 93 years old and has been playing guitar since she was 3. They say that a field recording made of her playing in 1956 influenced practically every folk guitar player of the 60s. :wow: Some of those recordings are included on this CD.

She is living musical history. You will not regret it.

10. The ABSOLUTE BEST ALBUM OF ALL SPACE AND TIME EVER-
oh.
my.
god.
i kid you not- if you've never heard this album or this band, do your ears a favour and SEEK THEM OUT.

the band: Moose.
the album: High Ball Me!

you can sample it here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004YA82/qid=1120854409/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-0196956-9814551?v=glance&s=music

a couple reviews:

After a lengthy sabattical spent contemplating Jesus, the never-less-than-mighty Moose return with their 4th and most perfectly-formed album (and their first North American release since their brush with Virgin Records and their tour of the USA with The Cocteau Twins). "High Ball Me" is an as-near-as-dammit realisation of the perrenial Moose fixations of classic 60s / 70s pop, heart shredding country & western, stellar songwriting (of the Nillson / Hazelwood school), and borderline-melodic guitar mangling. The amalgam of these influences is one of the best and most diverse pop albums of the century so far, and the greatest record the House of Love never managed to make despite always threatening to. With the emphasis always and firmly on tune and harmony, the 11 tracks rush forth in a swell of sweeping strings, shimmering guitars, rousing organs, rattling bongos, Joe Meek-esque antique effects, and too many other beautiful ideas to take in at once. Did i mention the Pale Fountains?" (review by Penny Black)

A musical gem just waiting to be discovered!, April 28, 2003

What a beautiful album this is! If I had read about the different sounds and influences on this recording prior to hearing it, I wouldn't have thought it would work. How in the hell could bongos, goofy organ sounds and spaghetti-western guitar melodies go together with dark and moody British guitar pop? I know it sounds bizarre, but these influences meld together seamlessly on this album.

Moose's "High Ball Me!" simply has to be heard to be believed. Not only for its off-kilter amalgamation of diverse influences, but for the sheer quality of the songwriting contained within. This is pop music of the absolute highest order. Each song on this album has been meticulously and painstakingly crafted with so much love and attention to detail it is staggering. You can tell that the bandmembers of Moose are truly in love with the artistic possibilities of pop music and revel in writing and recording (why else would they continue doing it when obviously no one knows who they are?). It is truly a shame that this album has been completely overlooked by the media and music fans alike (they have no idea what they're missing!)...

12. "Best Reason to Buy the Sun" by the Benevento-Russo Duo
Organist Marco Benevento and drummer Joe Russo issued this album of good-sounding instrumental jazz last year. The last track is called "My Pet Goat."

13. Rogue Wave
Check out the Out of the Shadow album from 2004.

ROGUE WAVE Rogue Wave began almost by accident. In early 2002, faced with the sort of existential crisis unique to the newly unemployed, Zach Rogue decided to take some time off from his home base of San Francisco. He set off with a one-way ticket to New York in March with the intention of recording one or two songs with a friend, in an effort to exorcise his demons both artistically and personally. He came away with both a new lease on life and an album’s worth of material that would later become Rogue Wave’s debut, Out of the Shadow. After returning to the Bay Area with a nearly completed record in hand, Zach decided to leave his former band Desoto Reds and form his own group. At the end of 2002, while preparing the album for release, Zach rounded out band’s lineup with the addition of Pat Spurgeon (drums/keys/samples/vocals), Sonya Westcott (bass/vocals), Gram LeBron (guitar/keys/vocals). Zach soon realized that together the group started to “light up like fireworks” and “liked hugging each other.” Effortless friendship spawned their freshingly organic actualization of Rogue Wave, a band whose commitment to song-craft and to each other is nothing short of astounding

14. Folky acoustic rock...
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 04:41 PM by primate1
I highly recommend Bright Eyes' "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" album. Maybe some Elliott Smith too. "Figure 8" is my favourite of his albums.

Sam Roberts' "We Were Born In A Flame" is excellent as well.

Wintersleep's 2003 self-titled album is another good one. Their new album, also self-titled, is good, but not as acoustic as the first.

15. This guy, Raul Midon, is fantastic. Was on Letterman last week.
http://www.raulmidon.com/bio/index.php

"It's rare that an artist arrives onto the pop music scene so fully loaded with the kind of hit-making potential that singer-composer-guitarist Raúl Midón possesses. The New Mexico-born, New York-based Midón makes his recording debut with State of Mind, produced by Arif Mardin and Joe Mardin for Manhattan Records. The 13-track collection of Midón originals is a remarkable mélange of soul, R&B, pop, folk, jazz and Latin. The CD places on display his earnest, lyrical songwriting; full-bodied vocals steeped in soul; a singular syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused acoustic guitar style; a unique vocal trumpet improvisation; and hopeful disposition.

While you can hear traces of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Jose Feliciano and, Richie Havens in his music, Midón is an extraordinary original whose passion is expressed in his indelible songs. "I like to celebrate the possible, the highest, the best of possibilities for human beings," says Midón, who has been blind since birth and is the son of an African American mother and an Argentinean father. "It's easy to be pessimistic given the state of the world. But I'm inspired by people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi who had the ability to transform. Collectively we create an enormously powerful force that can change the world and overcome any obstacle.""
