Do you go to movies because you find the stars attractive?

This was a side topic on another thread. I hear people say all the time that they do, but I sort of thought they were joking. That's got to be the dumbest reason to shell out money to see a movie. I mean, if you want to look at sexually attractive celebrities why don't you just buy a copy of People, or whatever rocks your socks?

I saw Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? sitting next to three soccer moms who apparently, having evesdropped a bit, only went to see the movie to catch a glimpse of George Clooney's ass. They demanded their money back as they left the theater.

Most people go to enjoy themselves. If seeing Brad Pitt's ass makes me enjoy myself, what's it to you?

For the record, I go to movies for substance. But I don't mind good looks either. I don't see why it would matter on why anyone watches what they want.

12. Not my OP, but I want to answer for me.

It's nothing to me why others go see a film. I get uncomfortable when the only criteria someone else uses to judge a person is their sexual appeal, or their looks. It sounds--to me-- sexist. That's a big issue to me, more so than to other people, apparently, although one of the reasons I hang out at DU is to meet like-minded people.

I'm not claiming there's a law anywhere that everyone has to make me happy or comfortable. :-) On the other hand, no law prevents me from pointing out when I am unhappy or uncomfortable, so I do so from time to time.

with admiring people's looks. I don't go to the movies for that, but I have a problem with people who are judgmental. It bothers me like people being sexist does. But I see where you are coming from.

The OP was complaining about another thread in which several people gushed about Jennifer Conally being one of their favorite actresses, and implying the only reason was because of how sexy she was. I do have a problem with that attitude, though of course people can say it all they want.

I don't think it's judgemental to point out that a big reason there is such discrimination in the work place towards women is because of the obsession with physical attractiveness. Women are too often hired and paid according to how good they look, more so than their abilities to do their job, and Hollywood is just one place this is obvious. Sexual harrassment is a result largely of the attitude that the main quality a woman can possess is her sexuality. While clearly not everyone who says "Hey, I want to see Dark Water because Jennifer Connally is hot" is such an employer or coworker, people who gush on and on about an actress's looks ONLY, and equate her value as an actress ONLY with her looks, are at the very least justifying the mentality that leads to these problems, no matter how innocently they mean it.

I squirm uncomfortably when a discussion devolves into how hot an actress or actor is. I'll admit, looks and sexuality can be part of the overall package, but just part. Beauty is easy to produce in Hollywood. Intelligence, comedic timing, dramatic skills, ability to develop and present a consistent character, all are more important than looks, to me.

I consider myself a FILM fan, not a MOVIE fan, and I usually go because of the director/screenwriter/story/whatever. If the star is an actor I admire, all the better, but it's usually the subject matter that draws me in -- I don't just see everything Actor X is in because I want to ogle him.

One great shot, speaking of butts, is of Paul Newman's butt in Absence of Malice with Sally Field. They're on his boat, and he turns to go up into the top area, and mmmm....mmmmm.....mmmm....nice shot. :)

I don't go JUST for that, though. It serves as a reward though, to some awful movies along the way. Mel Brooks's Men in Tights is a good example--men in tights alone can be a nice sight.

It would be worth it to see her - she's very attractive. But I don't go to see movies very often at all, much less for the attractive stars. I can go to websites like http://jennifer.bijou-bleu.org/ to see nice pictures of Jennifer, for example.

I'm the same way with CDs. I buy a lot of them, but I haven't bought because of attractiveness in quite a while. I buy from an artist like Sheryl Crow because I'm a fan of the music. It turns out that many of the female music artists I love are also attractive, though.

That's why half the actors in Hollywood have a career, because people like them for one reason or another (and good acting is just one of many, many reasons).

I went to see Pirates of the Carribean because I sincerely wanted to see it. I returned a few times, because I enjoyed the movie a great deal.:popcorn: I also have to admit that I was absolutely mesmerized by the way Johnny Depp looked in the movie.
