Ground beef, lean ground beef, ground turkey, ground lamb, or soy crumbles |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 11:02 PM by HypnoToad
I was hooked on soy crumbles. Morningstar brand.
But then I tried a no-name ground turkey, 1lb, which was 1/4th the cost of the 12oz package of soy crumbles! :wow: And what can I say about the ground up thanksgiving critter? :-9 :-9 :-9 YUM! Okay, ground-up real succulent dead animal bits have got no fiber and a bit more fat and a fair amount of cholesterol :scared: in them, but it's got real protein to compensate... Kewl.
Found lean ground beef the other day at the grocer's, for 40% off (making the net price 2x of the no-name ground turkey but still 50% less than the soy crumbles) so I bought 6LB worth (2x3LB packages). It's got slightly less cholesterol but a tad more fat... or was it the other way around? Oh well, both were similar. Can't wait to try it... And, yes, I checked the expiration date. Had 6 days to go before it had to be frozen, which means it's been re-packaged 50 or 60 times already and put on sale just so people will buy it...
As for standard ground beef, no way! Too fatty and too much cholesterol.
Ground lamb? Yummy stuff, but it costs as much as the soy crumbles but basically has as much fat and cholesterol as the ground turkey.
So I'll likely switch to the no-name ground turkey for general use. More meat for the money and I love my meat.
Won't be buying the food in the low-carb aisle though. Too little food for way too much $$$. It's called "exploitation" and a little research negates the need to spend hundreds of extra $$$. :D

1. Skeptical about your lean ground beef |
|
Any type of ground beef usually needs to be used or frozen within a few days. It was either marked wrong or it has something other than pure beef in it. I usually buy lean ground beef because I don't eat plain burgers and whatever I add to it, adds flavor. If I'm grilling burgers, I sometimes get full fat hamburger. They taste better. There is nothing like real beef. Ground turkey is alright, but I really don't like ground lamb. I don't like soy products and don't care how healthy they supposedly are.

I had never seen that brand of lean beef before. I saw a report on the telly a few months back where stores re-packaged meat by re-wrapping the same meat on the same styrofoam surface. But this stuff didn't look re-packaged and it was all within a plastic tube, no styro and isn't the sort of thing that can easily be re-packaged in the store... Of course, all that means nothing, but I'm sure it's technically all right and not crawling with bacteria... I just like being cynical... :D

but I ate and drank so much of them that I developed a sensitivity. After abstaining for about a year, I can now enjoy them occasionally.

Ground chicken is nice, too, when and where you can find it.
I think I get ground turkey for 59 cents a pound here in Chicago, so it is a bargain.
If you want something special, try ground ostrich (or emu), ground venison, and ground buffalo. Ostrich is my favorite. It's quite expensive, but it's terrific.

6. I'm spoiled now on Angus beef |

I get the 90% lean, which is still a lot of fat and now I can't tolerate any other kind. Sure I'm afraid of bovine spongiform encephalitis -- who isn't? -- but good, broiled ground beef makes me happy. :)

I can't find ground lamb locally, so I grind it myself when I feel in the mood. Halal, Greek, or kosher butchers may grind it, but not enough of them around here. Lamburgers are great, and I control the fat. I've ground my own beef, but then figured what's the point.
Ground pork is all over, but the fat's pretty high. There are arguments around about whether pork fat isn't all that bad anyway. Ground sausage mix is around, too, and it's pretty good, and less fatty than most commercially prepared sausages.
Not too thrilled about turkeyburgers, but I :loveya: turkey meatballs. Much of the flavor of meatballs isn't so much in the meat, but the seasoning and the type of sauce used.

12. Turkey is blander so requires stronger seasoning |

I love granburger or soy crumbles or whatever you want to call it. I'm not big on meat, but will cook it for my animals, if that makes sense. When my dog wasn't eating, his vet said to saute him some fresh liver. It made me wretch, but made my dog happy.

10. Hey Hypnotoad I hereby take back my birthday wish and spanky! |
|
Friday night I was handing out candy treats while sipping a nice French merlot and well, doing a little huffin' and puffin'. I logged on briefly, misread your post (well scanned it actually), logged off went back to check for other birthday wishes only to discover I was totally stupid. I was in bed asleep by 10:10. So you'll get your B-day wishes in around nine months. I like ground round. I won't touch lamb or veal.

has got to be Jennie-O ground turkey. Save-a-lot had it for 69 cents a pound forever. You almost never have to drain it, and after a little while, you forget that it's not ground beef.

18. I buy fresh grocery packaged meat |
|
I seriously have never tried a prepackaged brand of ground beef (well maybe unknowingly at someone else's house or restuarant). I buy ground beef or variants(round, chuck) in a mass packaged by the grocer. My family has always done this. When we were poor, one year, we shared the cost of a whole cow for a greatly reduced per pound price with another family and froze most of it but got it fresh. Does brand tubed ground beef taste the same as fresh packaged beef? I am assuming that it is cheaper. That's why you buy it, that and the later expiration date (perservatives and other additives?), right? I don't mean to sound like a food snob, but I really had never had that type before.
