IFC showing documentary "Punk: Attitude" at 10 PM EST

apparently this is one of the best docs about the punk movement. I haven't seen it yet and can't wait! it's part of Punk Month on IFC.

Also, another good documentary of the whole London scene from 1976-77 is "The Punk Rock Movie", by Don Letts. It is mainly comprised of live footage of the London scene, and includes not only the Pistols, but the early Banshees, Generation X, and a slew of other also-rans lost to history. It is probably most well-known for its grainy, frontal nude shot of Billy Idol changing in his dressing room.

Don Letts is a Brixton-born filmmaker who worked at the Acme Attractions shop in the 1970s (Acme was the main competitor for "Sex", which was the shop that "sponsored" the Pistols). Letts later went on to join Big Audio Dynamite and continues to make documentaries.

I "inherited" a copy of the film from an English professor of mine in the late 80s, and have watched it a number of times. The energy and performances are amazing.

16. Almost saw Gang of Four reunion on May 10 2005

but unfortunately I had a nervous breakdown instead and went into the psych ward for a week :(

Hopefully they'll stay together awhile longer and come back around. I was REALLY looking forward to seeing them.

All things considered, things are not bad. New meds, excellent therapist, and understanding boss, friends and family have helped. I don't think I've been this good in over a decade-- it just sucks that I had to fall so far to come back up. I've gained some great insight and clarity into my life I probably never would have gotten any other way.

The only bad part is my divorce. I've accepted it as a good thing, and am looking forward to moving on. The only rough part is cleaning out our house, splitting up the stuff and getting a new place. That's been a pain in the arse, but even that too shall pass.

29. Also "England's Dreaming" by Jon Savage

Probably the best document of UK punk that's ever been written. It starts in the 60s and goes all the way through the first wave of punk-- not only covering the music, but also the socio-political atmosphere of the times. And it makes a great reference, too!

That one is also quite good. Very funny stories from his school days, about people like Jah Wobble and Sid Vicious. Hard to believe Johnny was once a long-haired Hawkwind fan-- well, maybe not. Highly recommended! :thumbsup:

I went to a very preppy all girl's high school with a enrollment of about 80 in the entire upper school, and every senior had to give a "senior speech".

Mine was entitled: "History of the Punk Rock Movement". I had sound bites on cassette tape. I wore my T-shirt from Commander Salamnader. This was 1983.

Yes, it was the most popular speech of the year, and yes, my teachers all thought I was going nowhere. But I turned out OK.

They are today's modern punk band with a very powerful anti-war message. I loved what he shouted out at the Live 8 concert right before Holiday: "I'm not Anti-American, just anti-war" I think that sums up everyone here at DU.

I was really digging this doc until

they started talking about Nirvana. I don't particularly care for Nirvana and don't see how they are "punk." But I knew that about this doc going in so just figured I'd see what they said. Now Limp Bizkit, thats a whole other can of stinky beans.

I think either Henry Rollins or Thurston Moore said that in the film. I think Nirvana had the spirit of punk much more so than the other Seattle bands that came up with them.

as was said of Rancid. As someone who was in the punk scene when Rancid was at the heigh of their talents (...and out come the wolves) I always thought of them as punk, not rock influenced by punk. It would be an interesting case I'd like to hear.

Seen live? No. Heard? Yes. I understand they aren't the originators of the sound but when I was heavily into the scene while in Junior High and High School they were the top of the heap for punk rock, atleast for my friends and myself.

I do love The Clash and respect all of the other late '70's punk bands from the U.S. and the U.K.

It was great to see her participate in the piece, but I would have loved to have seen more of her, and coverage of her bands. It also would have been interesting to hear more details about other influences or groups that were spawned from the Sex Pistols influence, such as Gen X (Billy Idol).

Just getting a little taste of Siouxsie wasn't enough--would have loved to see some live footage of her. She's so amazing live!

But glad they covered some girl groups like the Slits, and groups of color like Bad Brains.

The punk movement is and was quite diverse...
