Eliminating "The Wall" and "Dark Side", favorite Pink Floyd Album |
|
it's too obvious with those juggernaut albums, but eliminate those and what is your favorite Pink Floyd album?
I would have to say Meddle. Right now I'm jamming to "Fearless" which is an amazingly lyrical song with a great guitar riff.

6. My next favorite is "Wish You Were Here" |
|
Interesting and sad story about this album: About that, Rick Wright said: "The whole album sprang from that one four-note guitar phrase of Dave's in Shine On. We heard it went, That's a really nice phrase. The wine came out, and that led to what I think is our best album, the most colourful, the most feelingful. Shine On was in the process of being recorded, the lyrics about Syd were written. I walked into the studio at Abbey Road, Roger was sitting, mixing at the desk, and I saw this big bald guy sitting on the couch behind. About 16 stone. And I didn't think anything of it. In those days it was quite normal for strangers to wander into our sessions. Then Roger said, You don't know who that guy is, do you? It's Syd. It was a huge shock, because I hadn't seen him for about six years. He kept standing up and brushing his teeth, putting his toothbrush away and sitting down. Then at one point he stood up and said, Right, when do I put the guitar on? And of course he didn't have a guitar with him. And we said, Sorry Syd, the guitar's all done."http://www.pinkfloydonline.com/discography/wywh.html

10. Anyone here ever had a listen of "Atom Heart Mother"? |

I've heard really bad things about it. But it did make UK's #1 album spot years before "Dark Side" made Pink Floyd a household name.

24. I have it. It's a solid, early Pink Floyd album. |
|
I like it a lot. I don't love it like I love Meddle or the later albums (Dark Side through my favourite, The Final Cut). It's true that the album is dominated by two long instrumental pieces, not up to Echoes/Shine On snuff, retaining odd chunks of the early psychedelic sound, having a bit too much of Alan Parsons' instrumental style. However, the first and longer instrumental, the title piece, has a solid flow, and is decent listening, with two or three incredible 3-4 minute sections spliced in.
The middle songs are solid. "If" is similar to, and as good as, a typical acoustic track from The Wall, althgough some would rank "Fat Old Sun" higher. "Summer of 68" is one of the tightest and most melodic of the early period singles.
Buy it. I've gotten probably 200+ hours of listening out of my copy.

15. I can't pick a favorite |
|
I like "Relics" and "A Nice Pear" because of the diversity of them. I like DSOTM because it is just a hell of an album. It's just too hard to pick. One of my favorite tunes:
"If" If I were a swan, I'd be gone. If I were a train, I'd be late. And if I were a good man, I'd talk with you more often than I do.
If I were to sleep, I could dream. If I were afraid, I could hide. If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain.
If I were the moon, I'd be cool. If I were a rule, I would bend. If I were a good man, I'd understand the spaces between friends.
If I were alone, I would cry. And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry. And if I go insane, will you still let me join in with the game?
If I were a swan, I'd be gone. If I were a train, I'd be late again. If I were a good man, I'd talk to you more often than I do.

25. I can read tab, but I like to play by ear |
|
since I don't always agree with how others tab out a song. These days there are tons of tab available on-line, but I only use it if I need a hint. I actually prefer just knowing the cords and then I can usually figure out the lead parts.

31. Well, I'll have to nominate "The Final Cut" |
|
Sure, I'll buy the argument that it's really a Waters solo album, but Gilmour and Barrett have their solo albums under the name "Pink Floyd" as well.
My brief argument is that while it doesn't have the level of guitar work or rock-anthem-sounding tracks, it makes up for it with good orchestral and band arrangments, a superior vocal performance, tightly composed tracks that paradoxically flow easily into each other, and most of all, lyrics that make clear, poetic, and deeply meaningful statements.

Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 10:45 PM by evlbstrd
By the time "Dark Side of the Moon" hit and made Floyd a sensation, I felt like an old hand. And then the radio and everybody I knew was playing "Moon" so much, I got sick of it, and went backwards.

Although I'm going to be honest; I'm apparently one of the few here who isn't a Pink Floyd worshipper, though like alot of other kids in the 70's, bought Dark Side Of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall.
I love Syd Barrett's stuff, though..
