I know it's costly, but I'm thinking of doing it.
I live 40 miles from the Maul of America.

My goal, all this week, is to go there every day.

And walk laps over a 3 hour period. One lap is all the way around and is appx 1/4 mile.

Is it worth the gas? (23MPG)

Is it too extreme? I have been doing some more walking of late (over the last month I've walked more but not every day and between the last 5 days I only walked yesterday and I felt much better afterward, if not very sweaty...) but as my legs continue to feel weaker and sore I've got to do more. I am not ready for the worst.

Heat is my enemy and these 90 degree temps (never mind humidity) will kill me in my current condition and I've got to rebuild myself.

1. Are there any places like
the YMCA or any other place that has a gym that is closer by?

2. Slow, moderate exercise is usually the right way...
to start. I saw an article that said slow walking for a longer time may be more beneficial than fast walking for a shorter time.

3. During the cold months
and right after my triple-by-pass surgery....I did the mall walk thing locally.... 1 lap = 1/3 mile....it was a three mile drive to the mall but it was worth it....there was no wind or cold to cope with and there were only two ramps that I had to negotiate...

It got me in shape to do my 2+ miles every day now...outside and up some pretty good-sized hills...my stamina is better and I FEEL a lot better...I may go back there this winter....

some of the pain you're feeling in your legs could be due to ill fitting footware.

7. Check with the Mall reception area
It's likely they have a mall walkers club you could consider joining.

Though, um, it's also likely to be filled with the seniors, not that there's anything wrong with that.

25. Well, 2 problems:
1. My normal walking speed is fater than that of your average 20 year old. Against your average 100 year old?!

2. Judging by my luck I'd then expect half them to hit on me... :scared:

8. After my surgery, in an attempt to get my strength back,
I started going to a different place everyday to walk. At first I picked places like Meijers and K-mart because they had baskets I could hold on to. I walked up and down every aisle and it took about 45 minutes. Now I go to a different mall, huge store, or nice neighborhood and walk for 45 minutes. I pick a different place everyday to make it more interesting.

9. I thought a lap would be longer
That seems like a small lap for the maul?! It would be smaller than once around the accelerator I work at. It is 7/8th miles around?

11. Check out local highshool or college or community college
They have indoor or outdoor tracks. Frequently facilities are available to public at certain times. Even grade schools usually have tracks. I'm no expert on this, but I think tracks are usually 1/4 mile. 4 times around gets you a mile.

HT to deal with, which I can understand. If I am outside too long I risk bringing on a migraine headache.

19. HypnoToad, I am surprised you live near
Bloomington MN. I have a friend in Minneapolis and will be visiting her in the fall (or so I hope). Wow! I'd love to meet you if I get up to MN. I love the MoA but then again Malls are my guilty pleasure (we all have them, fess up!)

I thought for sure you were a New Yorker!

I know what you mean about the heat and humidity of the midwest. Oy, can it be oppressive down here. I did 30 minutes at 3.0 miles per hour and a 3 percent incline on the treadmill at the local community center today. I feel good!

A bissel at a time a bissel at a time, toadaleh!

14. You would be better off going to a Y or other place
There might be a small fee. If you plan on going to the Y regularly for this, you might as well join. With gas costs as they are, you probably won't be paying too much more if not less and you will have saved time commuting there.

unless it is still too hot then. sometimes I walk right after dark too, but I would suppose that depends on your area.

16. It sounds like fun Hypno. Make yourself do x number of laps, and you
can reward yourself at the end by doing a little shopping.

Don't sweat the expense part, just get started doing something.

20. Save the gas money and get yourself a treadmill
:D

I also enjoy hiking, which is my form of walking. There are several good hiking courses nearby plus they're in the woods so it's not as god-awful hot. Just did 3 miles today at Brandywine State Park in Northern Delaware

23. I think it would be best to get a physical from the doctor
than take a self-diagnosis test online. Especially with Adrenal and Thyroid, you don't want to be messing with those organs!

26. Definitely, but this lets you know that you should
if you tend not to go to doctors due to the expense. I live near S.F. where Dr. Dean Edell does his syndicated radio call-in show (1:00 pm PT M-F http://www.KGO810AM.com) I notice many people call him to run a problem by him to see if they should go to a doctor. I think learning what is within the normal range, and what is not, is helpful.

24. I think everyone has said it
but find a local community center instead. You could use MoA as a treat for the occasional walk but use something closer for your daily constitutional. Meet up w/ some people and walk around. I sometimes walk w/a group of 65+ year old women. I'm only 30 but I really enjoy it. The pace is slower and they enjoy the company. Plus, they tell great stories about growing up w/ nothing and are more than willing to share some fantastic recipes (and we do have one man in the group-a 42 year old who tells stories about his SO. These women are more tolerant than you would ever expect.)
