I forgot how much I love that movie.
And you know, I think I was catching jokes I didn't catch when I saw it years ago.

5. When I found out that they based it on a real movie, that made it funnier! |
|
Can you imagine the stuff they came up with that didn't make it into the movie?

were really bad - until after Airplane! came out. Then the dramas became pretty funny, IMO

24. It was also very much based on a movie called Zero Hour! |
|
In fact the whole story arc of Airplane is lifted from that movie. The Zuckers and Abraham went to far as to buy the rights to Zero Hour! to cover themselves.

7. A military buddy of mine said that the movie "Airplane!" changed... |
|
...his life. That's right, Airplane! It coulda been "Schindler's List", in coulda been "Ghandi", but no, "Airplane!" changed his life. I didn't have a lot of deep conversations with this guy, but I must admit, he was funny as all hell!

Lieutenant Hurwitz: You'll be swell, you'll be great. Gonna have the whole world on a plate. Startin' here, startin' now. Honey, everything's comin' up roses...
Ted Striker: War is hell.

16. How can you tell the goofs from the real film? |
|
For instance, one of the goofs says the fuselage is a 707, the flight deck a DC-8. But the NOISE FROM THE ENGINES IS CLEARLY PROPELLERS. How do you know which are planned?

For people who would get it, it seems like it would be a GREAT joke.

Male announcer: The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in a red zone.
Female announcer: The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in a red zone. Male announcer: The red zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in a white zone.
Female announcer: No, the white zone is for loading. Now, there is no stopping in a RED zone.
Male announcer: The red zone has always been for loading.
Female announcer: Don't you tell me which zone is for loading, and which zone is for unloading.
Male announcer: Look Betty, don't start up with your white zone shit again.
Male announcer: There's just no stopping in a white zone.
Female announcer: Oh really, Vernon? Why pretend, we both know perfectly well what this is about. You want me to have an abortion.
Male announcer: It's really the only sensible thing to do, if its done safely. Therapeutically there's no danger involved.

27. The directors wanted to set the movie on a '50s prop plane. |
|
But Michael Eisner, who ran Paramount, wanted a jet to be the setting. Compromise!
