A follow up to last night's "Troy" thread |
|
How many here have actually read The Iliad? Not just excerpts but the whole damn thing? It just dawned on me that I haven't. I knew I was familiar with it, but have not read it all the way through.
In college I had a Classical history course and we discussed it in passing, as such I know Patroclus was more than Achilles' "cousin" :)
Just in case anybody is wondering, I thought Troy was an okay popcorn movie, but not much more. They played up the melancholy "its the will of the Gods" angle a little more than I expected.

1. I read the whole thing last summer. Was Troy on this weekend? |
|
Darn! Read The Illiad, it is very long, over 1,000 pages but it's good and really funny in some parts.

the general consensu was that aside from all the beefcake it was a terrible movie.
I didn't go into expecting a lesson in Homer. I will say this, it went great with that popcorn and a coke! :D

5. But what about the popcorn? |
|
For me when I get the craving for movie thatre popcorn any even remotely likely pic might do. It doesn't happen often, but it does strike.
Ddear go, that is the reason I went and watched "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" :scared:
ON a side note....does Sean Connery know he's allowed to turn roles down?

4. Read it last summer too... |
|
...after I saw the ads for the movie, now I'm glad I did. The movie was great for visuals, but I enjoyed The Iliad much, much better. Plus, I liked the details out of the book that you couldn't get in the on-screen version.
I really enjoyed the recent translation by Robert Fagles and will probably buy his others like The Orestia and The Odessey. Can't read the first without the follow-ups!

8. My classical history professor said the Odyssey |
|
was a much better tale than the Illiad, and that subtle off the cuff remark has always kept me (subconsciously) from following up. Next summer when I wrap up grad school I think I'll take a shot at the Illiad.
