I found Moxie! (But now I feel like an idiot.)
I mentioned at dinner last night that we had missed the chance to go to the Moxie festival in Maine over the weekend, and my older son said "...uh, Dad? They have it at the Stop & Shop right here in town. Always have."

So I took a walk over and sure enough, there it was. Duh. You'd think that in the five years we've lived here, I would have gone down the soft-drink aisle at the local supermarket just ONCE, but I haven't.

Dang, now I guess I should check out the frozen-food aisle as well. There may be some pleasant surprises in THAT unexplored territory, as well.

(The best part is that, like most other Moxie drinkers, I get to keep it all to myself. Everyone else in the family hates it.)

1. I have a family member who drinks Moxie
...diet Moxie.

Yeah, she hasn't really had too much trouble with other people getting into her Moxie supply.

(In an effort to be non-discriminatory toward Moxie, I tried it again last month when I went back to visit. That was not a good experience.)

4. I think if you don't drink it as a kid, you won't like it
as an adult.

Or maybe we Moxiers are just strange. Could be.

9. Explanation and trivia follows:
Moxie is a soft drink kind of like cola but additionally flavored with gentian extract.

In the 1920s, it was the #1 soft drink in the US. But one year there was a sugar shortage, and the management at Moxie decided to use their advertising budget to buy sugar.

The competitors bit the bullet and kept advertising, and the rest is history. Now, you can only find it here and there.

10. "Pleasant" surprise?
I grew up in Maine. Moxie is not one of my fonder memories of the place. That and the habit of eating raw rhubarb. Or rhubarb ruining strawberry pie.

As I said, all the more for me. And GPV's husband.

11. Moxie ice cream is very good. Don't care for the actual soda. To me
it tastes like coke and bourbon. But hubby loves it.

16. My sister-in-law put it best..."it tastes like old dead people".
We're heading up to Maine in a few days, and that's one beverage I won't be drinking.

17. No, it does not. Old dead people have a distinctly
earthy component that Moxie does not, and are a bit sweeter as well.

I'm an expert at these things, so trust me on this.

18. I haven't had it in a long time...
My grandparents used to buy it for family picnics. I don't think I've had any in probably 15 years now, though. Hrm.

19. Well, they got it at Stop & Shop just over the bridge
from where you work.

Or you could stop by here for one of mine. But no complaints if you don't like it. A simple "ACK!" and some spitting noises will be enough to indicate your displeasure if it's not as good as you remember.
