Question. What do I wear? It's a "costume" party. I HATE costume parties, but it's for a good cause (cancer research) so I cannot beg off. I'm open to suggestions.

2. Either go early 70's,

when we still wore bell bottoms and such. Or go late, punky-punky.
edit to add: disco still sucks.

3. So many choices!
Macrame, bell bottoms, polyester shirts and/or three piece suits, wide ties, platform shoes. You can get in the mood by wating Saturday Night Fever, Welcome Back Kotter, or Carrie.

Have fun!

4. Big collars. Polyester. Shirt unbuttoned to the waist with gold chains.

Longish hair if you can. Mustaches, sideburns.

Think disco. Think Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever." Think Bee Gees. Think tight fitting synthetic fabrics. Think cocaine and the last residues of the sexual revolution.

Ick. Glad I survived that era.

Oh, and really, REALLY crappy cars.

5. Have you ever seen That 70's Show?
What I would do would be pick a character from the show and do it up right. Go to a resale shop and buy your costume after you've decided.

Try and choose one you'll have fun "being" for the night.

Have a blast! :hi:

7. I went to one of these...
I wore a vintage dress that was very late 70's NY Socialite, and put a tiny bit of um...baking soda under my nose. People got what I was trying to do:P. Very Bianca Jagger:7

10. Go for a different 70s look, hiking boots, blue jeans, and a band t-shirt.
Very few people in the 70s actually wore that TV sitcom disco junk.

A hideous creation from the early 70's.

14. Try the Greg Brady look: plaid pants and open-throated shirt
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 12:10 AM by undisclosedlocation
Any thrift store can help you with this. Ditto the leisure suits suggested above.

Edit: Or the inexplicably ever-popular "I'm with stupid" (with an arrow pointing to your right) t-shirt. You would not believe (or I hope you wouldn't) how popular these were in the '70s. Available online for real money, but hopefully you can find one of these in a thrift store as well.

17. Only dorks and Greg Brady dressed like that.
Look at 70s rock album covers to see how the cool people dressed.

18. I'm 43 years old. I remember much, much more than I'd like to about the
'70s. This is for a party, not a Smithsonian exhibition. Most people, cool or otherwise, actually dressed like what they thought the cool people dressed like in the '50s for much of the '70s. Maybe he should wear a DA instead?

20. Fine then go with the Brady Bunch SNF polyester clown suit look.
Even though none of the "Disco Sucks" crowd I knew would've been caught dead in those ugly uncomfortable clothes at the time.

19. You have a lot of options. The early seventies were a bleed-over...
...from the 60's. The mid seventies you start to get into disco and the suburban pop look, and by the late seventies, you get the punk, and pre-preppy look. Many options, so just pick one.

21. I think I've got something original...
And it's cheap, too!!

Get a posterboard. Draw the outline of a picket fence on it. Cut it out and put two holes in it to hang it around your neck (you might want to get some of those little reinforcers that you can use for notebook paper). Write the word "WATER" on each vertical board.

Water gate... get it?

22. Sid Vicious.
Then you'll be completely justified in trashing the buffet, walking through a tempered-glass door, falling asleep during interviews, shooting your audience, and having bad skin.

What more could you possibly ask for?

24. Platform shoes are a must!
They should have high clunky heels on them.
A pair of stiped bell bottoms would look nice.
A nylon shirt of a wonderful print would look nice with the pants. Be sure to leave the top buttons unbuttoned!!
