Anyone live in/near Santa Cruz and can reccommend a hotel?

Apparently Dookus is no longer here? Wha happen? Anyway we took a trip last year and stayed at the Coast which was a nice place right on the beach but really pricy, like $300 a night pricy and this time we may go for 3 nights which means $900 plus tax and that leaves about $10 to actually DO something!

I've been searching the hotels via the web and the reviews are SOOOOO negative they are cracking me up and scaring the crap out of me at the same time. It seems that within a block of the Coast it is considered a "bad" neighborhood with tales of vehicles broken into and signs saying to lock your door while sleeping for safety.

So if anyone hass experience or lives in the area and can offer suggestions please post your reviews here.

I found great places in Monterey close to the ocean.....but I do not know Santa Cruz.
