Hmm I gotta think of a speech topic
for Public Speaking class.. It has to be an informative style speech only (no pursuasion) and has to last about 5 mins. It can basically be about anything so I'm feeling lost without a topic here.

I could do something political but it has to be something that people don't already "know" and that isn't persuasive..

Any ideas, my lovely DUers? :loveya: (blatant flattery) ;)

1. The Evolving Meaning of 'Advise and Consent'
You can easily get a half hour's worth of material comparing the meaning of Advise and Consent as it was originally intended, and what its meaning has evolved to be at the present time. This is a timely topic because the Senate is about to confirm or reject whoever Bush nominates to replace Sandra Day O'Connor. If you stick to the facts you can't be accused of partisanship.

countries of origin according to companies that import from certian countries. and what that money goes to support. not directly pursassive, but it gets the point across to stop buying saudi oil. political enough?

3. The women's suffrage movement?
Lots of available info, not taught thoroughly in most schools, lots of drama, photos & interviews.

Also, there are a bazillion examples of linguistic oppression all over the world.

Millenialist religious movement--too many to name.

Really, I could do this all night.

4. Do something on Margaret Mead....
...a great thinker and one of the most influential women ever. Here's a bio on her, and google her for other topics and take it from there. You'll have a good five minutes filled up, if not more... http://www.wic.org/bio/mmead.htm

9. My best speech in my college speech class was

about diethylstilbestrol (DES) and the cancers it caused in the daughters of some women who took it. It was widely prescribed for pregnant women between 1946-1970, and still prescribed after that though by 1970 the first clear-cell vaginal adenocarcinomas in adolescent daughters of DES mothers had been documented and the correlation suggested. That particular cancer is normally not found in women until they've gone through menopause and here it was in DES daughters who'd just come through puberty.

Also, it was known for years that it did not stop women from miscarrying (that's what it was prescribed for) but doctors continued prescribing it.

A good, serious topic if you can say vaginal adenocarcinoma in front of a bunch of people. ;-)

15. something unexpected
cousin marriages

(I tried to defend cousin marriages once on another forum just from a stubborn desire to play devil's advocate and learned a hell of a lot more about it than I bargained for.)
