So...um...my parents are meeting my BF tonight.
I haven't done the meet-the-parents thing since I was 18. This is the first post-divorce incident of such, and I'm a bit....petrified.

Wish me luck.

:scared:

2. The post divorce meetings are harder than the teen thing
I think. Now you actually have the world experience to measure with your parents' eye. YMMV.

Good luck, I am sure it will be a pleasant evening.

4. Thanks; it should be fine.
Yeah, the teen things carry a lot less weight.

My ex and my parents never really bonded (they didn't hate each other, but they didn't have a lot in common), so my biggest concern is unrealistic expectations. Specifically, as the BF and my dad are both yappy (as am I), I'm worried that they'll over-bond and alienate my mom in the process.

But, I guess, that's small potatoes compared to what it could be -- I'm not worried that my parents will like or dislike J, and it's not like they're going to ground me or anything.

8. I went through the same thing about 4 years ago...
Good luck!

My ex filed for divorce in late '99, divorce was finalized in 2000 and I brought home a woman that would eventually be my 2nd wife probably around 4 years ago now. To top it off, this new woman was not white, not an American citizen and English was not her native language.

I was strangely not very nervous, though. I think she was more nervous than me, though she did pretty well.

But, my parents love my wife now and never really liked my ex-wife. So, it all worked out in the end.

9. Ah...there are a few things my parents dislike on paper about the BF
His divorce still isn't final (but neither was mine when we started dating), he has a child, he doesn't have a college degree (he's going back to school this fall), and he's currently unemployed.

But, he doesn't smoke and is only a light drinker, so that's a big plus in my parents' eyes.

10. just tell him to be himself
and hopefully you won't have to worry.

I'm lucky that my wife now did not have any kids and had not been married.

12. Oh, I'm not worried about him.
He's charming. People like him. (I guarantee -- if/when my parents meet his daughter, which they won't be doing tonight, they will shed whatever objections they had to me dating someone with a child, because she, at 2.75, can win just about anyone over.)

I'm not worried about my parents either.

Or me, for that matter.

I'm just generically nervous, I guess.

13. Heh...
I suppose that's a concern of mine -- of course they'll be making comparisons in their head. For some reason, I'm specifically concerned that any minor PDA (even hand holding, let alone a quick kiss) will be scrutinized and picked apart (not to my face, but still), as Hedges and I started dating when we were teenagers, and as a teenager, I did not do any PDA whatsoever in front of my parents, and the habit just stuck.
