Does anyone know of a good music reviews website? |
|
I'm looking for a review of the new All-American Rejects CD... and all that's out there is RollingStone's version of a review, which is not helpful.
Anyone know of a good, in-depth site for album reviews?

Although, from my experience, they tend to be very skeptical of so-called "mainstream artists" which really isn't fair. I wouldn't be surprised if they automatically dissed the AARs because they were semi-popular a while back.
You might want to check out All Music Guide as well. I've been fond of them recently.

It looks like there will probably be a review of the CD eventually on Insound, since they have their previous CD listed. I'll just wait. THanks!

The best thing I've read in Pitchfork recently... |
|
Was David Cross's mocking Pitchfork reviews. Totally spot on. I like reading that site but they are often times so full of crap.
I'll never forget reading one of their views that was so absurdly and over the top factually inaccurate that I didn't know whether to throw my computer screen or hold my side in laughter.

10. Yeah, I take their reviews with a grain of salt. |
|
I like the overall rating number, that's usually a better indicator of the quality of the music. The words? Eh, it's mostly people wanting to sound cool, so they end up sounding like pretentious wankers.

5. I'll second Allmusic..... |
|
Some flaws, but given the scope of their database that is to be expected. But the writing and the assesements are almost always spot on. Not sure if they're up to date on newer releases, but what they do have is really good. An invaluable resource.

6. Your hubby writes for AMG? |
|
That is awesome. I recently discovered their website and it has a wealth of information about pretty much any established artist under the sun. Good for him!

11. What I like best about the allmusic writing... |
|
..is that it keeps things in perspective and the writers definitely seem to know the historical place of given artists. In other words they clearly don't have the same person writing the reviews and career biographies of King Crimson as they do writing the ones of No Doubt or Sugar Ray. Or if they do, that person knows enough to place each one in their proper context.

It sounds like i'll be waiting a little while to buy this one, I was sort of hoping there would be some growth since their last album.

Possibly the greatest music magazine ever, bar none. As good as the Trouser Press Record Guides, but comes out twice yearly. Literally HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of reviews in each issue, everything from rock to jazz to blues to country.
Better yet, it's completely independent, and has been run by the same guy for the last quarter century out of his Manhattan apartment.
If they don't have a review, nobody else will. :D

12. Is that still Jack Rabid's zine? |
|
I wish Trouser Press would put out another guide. The one I got in the early 90's is literally disintegrating from over-use, as is the one that came out in '95 or thereabouts. But at this point there is no way they could keep up with everything that has come out since then.

16. Yeah, he's still running it |

writing most of the content, too. I've been an on-and-off subscriber since 1991, right at the height of the shoegaze thing (which I still think was very under-rated, especially to what's come out since). They also have a record label now (Pink Frost), and Jack's newest band Last Burning Embers put out a release on it not too long ago. I don't know how he does it.
Agreed about those two Trouser Press guides-- they are probably the most-used books in my house!!! :D

13. Has anyone ever heard of Mark Prindle? |
|
www.markprindle.com
Sorry, I don't mean to hijack this thread but I wanted to let people know of this record review site I frequent that is hilarious. This guy is very knowledgable of music and writes his reviews in a very funny yet educated manner.
The site is updated pretty infrequently, and when it is updated it is usually not big name new releases, but it is a great resource for discussion of so-called "classic" albums.
Check it out if you get a minute...

I've never seen or heard of it but between the reviews and interviews I have now found another time sucking site to visit.
Thanks.
