DU Golfers!!! (Caution: Brag Alert!) |
|
I played in an outing yesterday. Par 72, 6618 yard course. Rating of 71.1 and a slope of 122. Well, i went through a period in the zone!!!! I shot a 71! One under freakin' par! ONE UNDER!
I played the first 7 holes with 2 bogeys and 5 pars, two of them saves. Then i birdied the next three holes. (A 175 yard par 3, a 505 yard par 5 and a 410 yard par 4). Then played the last 8 holes all pars, with only one save. I hit 10 of 11 greens in regulation!
Made a swing change early this month, and have found a groove. Man, am i psyched! I'm just POUNDING the ball right now. There are just certain times when it all comes together. The feeling is the essence of zen! I don't hear anything. I don't see anything but the ball. I don't even feel the pain in my legs when i'm swinging. Big, big fun when that happens.

2. WOW!!! I am VERY impressed and jealous! |
|
Great play, really, really great play!
I'm still really beginning - played well at the weekend (48 for 9 holes on a 2254 yard par 31) but played atrociously a couple of weeks ago.
Sometimes I can go for 5 rounds without hitting a bad drive, other weeks I'll be banana-ing the ball out about 200 yards to the right.....
You had a good game!
:toast:
I started to learn with my girlfriend when we spent a year in Australia - I've got some great pics of the local course with 20 kangaroos lying 10 yards in front of the tee, oblivious to what was coming up behind them!

What with the MS and all, there aren't many sports i can play. I can't really run very well, since my legs are a little out of sync. I can walk fine with my right leg a bit slower than my left, but if i try to run, i get far enough out of sync to fall down. Not a good thing. But, at least in golf, i get to stand still and do it.
The 'roo thing on the golf course would be very cool, btw. The Professor

5. I am officially jealous. |

I am driving the ball well. Very straight. Irons are off target about 10 yards left, but also straight. Short game is a shambles. Last time out, a 90, which is decent for me.

8. Anything Under 100 Is Perfectly Fine |

I'm just in a groove right now. The swing change is working beyond my expectations. Added 10+ yards off the tee and about 6 yards carry with every iron. Makes every hole 15 to 20 yards shorter. Hitting 8 iron into a green instead of 6 makes for lower scores, i tell ya. The Professor

My goal is to someday either break par or shoot even par. My best is 3 over. Were you thinking about breaking par or did you just let it happen?

7. An Interesting Question |
|
Several years ago, (probably 7 or 8) i had come to the conclusion that what i liked about golf was the ability to immerse one's self into the moment. My whole zen thing!
So, since then, i never worry about the score. I worry about finding the feeling for each shot as a separate event. If i find enough moments of absorption, i'll hit enough good shots to score well. So, no i wasn't thinking about breaking par.
All that being said, when you are making nothing but pars, birdies, and fewer bogeys than birdies, it doesn't take an advanced degree in hyperbolic topology (thank you Dr. Frink!) to know what the score is. But, ignoring that and just thinking about the next shot is more fun for me anyway.
Another reason that i never play for money. The Professor

I think I'll try to apply it this weekend. My trouble is, when I'm in the zone my mind wanders too much and I start getting negative thoughts about my game. I conquered the breaking 80 boogeyman long ago but breeking par is a bitch---you should be proud. BTW, You don't play for money? Wow!

9. Nice work.....Is that your first time under par? |
|
I struggle to stay in the mid 80's. I was driving the ball like crap but hitting my irons fairly well early in the season. We had a baby a few weeks ago, however, and needless to say, I haven't been out since. COngratulations. Nice Milestone.

10. No, It's Not. First Time Since I've Had MS, Though |
|
I was a plus handicap in college. (Played on the college team.) Quit while in grad school completely. Started playing again in 1992, and got my handicap back to scratch, then got sick.
Got up to shooting in the low 80's, and then worked the last 10 years to chip that away by finding a swing that works for a 48 year old with MS who's blind in his dominant eye.
I'll never be able to play the way i once did. Getting too old for that and have the illness. But, i'm sure happy playing at this level for my age and modest infirmity. The Professor

12. Way to battle. Glad you still enjoy it. |

My grandfather, while he doesn't have MS, is also blind in one eye and has an understandably limited range of motion. He still shoots in the low 90's. He has always amazed me. And the game means so much to him. As I'm sure it does to you too. Congrats.
