Gay marriage touches me. Yaaaay! |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 05:21 PM by undisclosedlocation
My best friend from freshman year in college got married last year, it turns out. While I was disappointed to hear about it in our alumni mag, I was thrilled to be reading such an item in an alumni mag. (We fell out of touch after college, tracked each other down after 9/11, then lost touch again. I don't think not sending me an announcement was anything personal. He has a history of changing his ISP and losing his address book every time.)
I'll never make it as a proper homophobe and raht-thinkin' Amerkin. When I saw the announcement, I got tears of joy in my eyes (and there they are again) just as with any wedding of a dear friend, plus an admixture of "what brave guys." Like Dorothy Parker, I always have to cry a little bit about courage.
I want to send a congratulatory email and also abuse him for not telling me about it personally, but be absolutely clear that I'm kidding about the latter. Is this ok?:
"Mazel tov! "Just saw in the (redacted) that you and (redacted) were married last year. Awesome! Kindly accept huge congratulationage.
"Wish I'd gotten a personal note about this, but I figure you probably lost my email address again. Still, it's a pity about that huge yacht I was going to get you...
"Note: Somebody getting married from the class of '03 topped you. 'The late Fr. Chuck Pfeiffer officiated...' Can't help but think there might have been a better way to phrase that.
"Again, Mazel tov!"
Edits: As it turns out, I can neither spell two-letter words nor remember three-letter acronyms.:P

3. It means that Fr. Pfeiffer died between the time of the wedding |
|
and its announcement in the alumni magazine. A skilled writer would have said, "officiated by Fr. Chuck Pfeiffer, who has since passed away," but apparently they aren't teaching syntax or common sense in the Ivy League anymore. (Those kids today! :D)

Your friend will be pleased (particularly if you guys have stayed in touch off and on) to hear from you after this time. And I'm sure that the fact that he didn't send an announcement to you was an accident. You put him on ease with that.
Good announcement. :-)
