63. Never had it, AFAIK.
I've cut back on meat in general, and as far as beef goes Inow only have the occasional small filet--the leanest cut there is.

15. No, but it was so many years ago (20?) that I tasted veal, that I wouldn't
have a clue how it tastes. Wouldn't touch it anymore than I would eat a cat or a dog.

yum yum! due to demand they turned to the other method. but i'd prefer if they turned back to the original method. little rarer, but i just love the sound of "cow abortion" mmmmm. so tasty.

I love the South Park episode where they kidnap the cows after finding out how veal is made and force the government to change the name of veal to tortured baby cows.

21. It seems that that is the concensus.
I ask this because I was in the market yesterday and saw very well priced veal stew meat and well priced beef short ribs. The veal was the better value (and I remember liking it when my Mother would serve it) but couldn't seem to buy it for some reason.

35. That hesitance may be why the veal was a better buy, too.
I can't say that if I find veal is raised in a more humane way, I wouldn't eat it again. Perhaps if prices continue to drop, they will change the method.

25. I've eaten veal twice, I think. And as I recall, at the time,
it tasted very good. Not like beef, though, which seemed odd considering that it is "beef" so to speak.

That was, of course, quite some time ago.

makers are like the makers from star trek. so they'd use them to make human flesh. it was very tasty and advertised everywhere in the comic. :D

i've heard repeatedly that human is tasty. maybe when one day gotti makers are created i'll try some. heard it is succulent and doesn't need salt.

29. I don't worry about the veal issue...'cause most everything sold
in supermarkets isn't true veal, but baby beef.

"White veal" calves are the ones kept in individual pens and deprived of any nutrient that might color their flesh. "Baby beef" calves are treated pretty much as other beef cattle, just slaughtered earlier.

So I enjoy (when I can afford it, which isn't often) a nice 'veal' dish made out of baby beef.

"I believe there's a place for all of Nature's creatures -- right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy."

Veal Marsala or Veal Francese...oh yes!

I grew up on Basque food and I love veal.

52. I love it. We ate quite a bit of veal in Spain, cooked in some
interesting ways. Pot roast, grilled like steak, sauteed with artichokes and white wine, etc.

My mom used to make veal roasts from time to time,(probably given to her by some relative that had just killed a young calf now that I think about it) and I never see that cut of veal in my market...they have the cutlets that look sort of like minute steaks, the scallopini cut and the osso bucco cut, and very rarely veal liver, which I love.

I think back when I was growing up, it was all baby beef as described above, not the "100% milk fed veal" that is sold now, and is so controversial.

I remember when I lived in Massachusetts that veal was much more plentiful in the grocery than it is in Texas. And cheaper.

$18.00 a pound for scallopini cut at Central Market is a bit pricey for my budget.

It's been so many years since I had it I can't remember. But I'll never eat it again.

There are different approaches to making your diet less cruel. I was looking for the quote from Cesar Chavez where he told Jeffrey Masson (author of The Pig Who Sang to the Moon, When Elephants Weep, etc.) that it's more important to give up eggs and milk than meat, because the animals are kept in such cruel conditions. But I only found a reference to the quote in a book review by Karen Dawn of DawnWatch.com.

She made a comment though about the number of animals being killed and how it could cause less suffering to eat beef than other animals:

"The number of animals killed for food in the United States over the last twenty years has increased exponentially as people have shifted from eating beef to chicken and fish. A person who eats steak every night for a year might be responsible for the death of one animal, whereas somebody eating chicken every night eats hundreds of animals every year. And chickens are exempt from most humane slaughter laws, and are subjected to the worst treatment imaginable during their lives."

Also:

"When one thinks it through, one realizes that if one were to eat chickens raised on old fashioned farms where they led decent lives, one would contribute to less suffering than one does when eating factory farmed eggs. The same argument could be made for free-farmed beef over the milk of an abused cow who will eventually be hamburger meat (or even modern feedlot farmed beef, since steers fare slightly better than other animals – at least they spend the first six months of their lives grazing)."

I am a certified carnivore, but even I have limits. I get my meat from Niman Ranch, where the animals seem to be treated decently. It's not the death that bothers me much - it's the torture.

I was a kid, and was told it was a "delicacy." I remember not understanding the big deal. I didn't think it was anything special. Then, I found out how the calves are treated. It was easy to decide to never have it again, since it wasn't so great anyway!
