Can anyone recommend the best "quit smoking aid".? Need some
advice. My stop smoking class has recommended the patch, lozenges, or the nicotine inhaler. Also, they mentioned Zyban. I know that most of the quitting will be my own willpower, but they do recommend a little help if we feel we need it.

2. I've tried Nicorette
It makes me really crave cigarettes. It is not the same thing.

I don't know about the patch.

But how about, if you ever touch another cigarette, I'll come over to your house and stomp a fucking mud hole in your gut?

No. I guess that is not practical.

I'm a horrible cigarette addict.

Let me know if you find something that works. I have always thought that 30 days of sedation would get me over it.

B-)

12. There's a really good support site at www.whyquit.com
They have a good board, too: http://www.msnusers.com/FreedomFromTobaccoQuitSmokingNow/myfirstpost1.msnw?action=get_threads&all_topics=1

Watch out though...there are some VERY crabby freepers over there.

5. The ONLY thing that works is the sheer desire to want to quit.
I loved, loved, loved, loved smoking. And one day, I knew I wanted/had to quit and I did. Before that, nothing worked. And yes, I quit cold turkey. I'm not saying "quit smoking" products don't work, but I am saying that it has to be 90% determination on your part.

8. I did hypnosis...
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 11:14 PM by BeTheChange
Given, Im 11 days in, but it is fantastic.. Ive never been able to quit for more then a day previously- 2 on gum or the patch.. but they were excrutiating. And a day was if I was lucky, I have no will power. The first 3 days were the hardest, but still.. alot easier then I had ever thought they could be. My main problem was wanting a cigarette right after I ate. All my other triggers, coffee, stress... they were easy.

The nicotine replacement stuff never helped me. I tried the patch, gum and zyban..

I highly recommend hypnosis, but do yourself a favor and pay for the one on one.. I go back one more time and the total cost was 250... Id gladly spend it again. I smoked for over 10 years over a pack a day... it feels so good to be smoke free.

21. Heh..
All joking aside, I wouldnt have even known I had been hypnotized, except for the fact that all the usual chatter I have going on inside my head stopped. I have a stressful job and life in general has been very hectic lately, so Im always thinking of the 101 things I need to be doing.

I was completely aware the whole time and had no fear that I was not in control and could stop at any time.

A bonus is that I was sooo friggin relaxed for the first week.. even though work was insane, I felt like Id just gotten back from a vacation.

Im pretty stoked about this. I cant wait till we get back to Cali and I can try climbing a 10k footer with my friends. I was always the one that made it halfway up the mountain and couldnt go on because I just couldnt breathe anymore.

11. The patch is like Cold Turkey Lite
It takes the edge off the physical withdrawal a bit, but don't think of it as a cure-all which will make quitting painless.

Gum and inhalers seem like a bad idea to me since you're just replacing one addiction with another. After you work hard to quit smoking, you'll have to turn around and work hard to quit the gum or whatever. The whole point is to break the jones-fix cycle. At least with the patch, there's a steady stream of nicotine which you have no control over.

14. Autopsy Photos
That, and Nicorette, and an Appendectomy, did it for me. My Dad going through (successful for two years now) throat cancer treatment just reinforced it. I quit in 1997, but I still have the urge to smoke, so I still chomp the gum from time to time...

15. My advice is not to use nicotene replacement therapy.
Try Zyban (or other non nicotene alternative). The whole idea is to break the nicotene addiction and the Zyban would help with the anxiety from the nicotene withdrawal. But then again..every smoker is different-you have to go with what you think will help you the best.

Just remember that you don't have to quit FOREVER...you only have to get through today-worry about tommorrow when it comes.

I wish you the best of luck in quitting. I lost my father and my stepfather to smoking (emphysema in both), and as I type this my mother is preparing for her second surgery for lung cancer, and the outlook for her is not good.

Good luck. And pat yourself on the back for having the courage to kick this habit.

your mother all the best for a good recovery. My thoughts are with you and her.

that's very kind. I really wish you the best of luck with quitting. It's a horrible horrible addiction and you are doing a great thing by quitting. Not just for yourself, but for your loved ones too. You can do it!

16. Lozenges
work really well if you don't mind being addicted to them. They are expensive but at least you can breath and walk up the stairs without coughing up a lung. They are difficult to stop, I have a friend who has been using them for a year now but has not even been tempted to smoke.

23. Zyban/Wellbutrin did it for me
I started smoking at 17 and tried to quit three times before asking my MD for a Wellbutrin prescription. I was also struggling with a bout of depression at the time, and I knew that Zyban was simply Wellbutrin under a different name.

I quit buying cigarettes within a month, and I quit bumming other people's smokes within six months, when cigarettes finally began to taste foul to me.

This was in 2003, and the habit hasn't returned.
