Snake dies after biting priest

A king cobra snake has died after biting a Hindu priest in India.

The 3ft 6ins cobra bit Biswanath Kanwar while he was feeding it milk at Barapgahar in Jharkhand.

The snake lay motionless on the floor, vomited blood and died, reports United News of India.

The priest regularly fed milk to the snake at the Nagdevata temple at Barapgahar.

Snakes don't drink milk, no matter what this priest might have believed he was doing. Probably died from the milk or starvation. The priest probably recieved a dry bite.

However, it's not good for them unless it's been treated with lactase.

I doubt this snake died of starvation; it seems likely there would have been a supply of rodents in the temple (especially with priests leaving milk around!) and even given that the lactose couldn't be broken down, the protein and fat in the milk would have still been used by the snake's body.

I once made a last-ditch effort to save a sick baby garter snake by feeding it colostrum (hoping the antibodies would help against an intestinal parasite). The snake eagerly drank the slightly-warmed milk, but it was already too far gone and died. :-(

rodents won't work, one of the reasons they are not often kept. Rarely someone will train a king to take rats, those snakes will fetch several times more than the regular as most snake folks don't care to kill other snakes.

On second thought I suppose a snake might drink a liquid other than milk, unlikely as it seems to me. Guess it's those ancient arguments I've had with country folk who claimed that snakes milk cows, not! I've got to say it would never occur to me to try what you did, with the unsettled state of reptile medicine you just never know.
