Great Opera and how can you not like No. 2 - Duet, better known as the flower song.

the love scene with Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. :-)
I agree, it's a gorgeous piece of music.

4. First time I heard it was in 'I've Heard the Mermaids Singing' |
|
Which is ironic in that a few characters in the movie were lesbians and 'Misunderestimator' refers to it as the lick me song...
Yes, it is a gorgeous piece of music no matter who's getting licked or whatever. :-)

5. It is one of my personal favorites |
|
My daughter is an aspiring opera singer due to the Flower Duet.
I can't wait to hear her sing it some day. I saw this performed in Seattle a few years ago and it was one of the best productions I have seen there.
I can only encourage you all who think that Opera is not "for you". Go see a production Live. You'll walk away a convert.
I was fortunate to have a public school education in New Jersey in the 60's and 70's. We had twice yearly trips to the Met and this early education opened up the world of Opera for me.
Thanks Mr. Babbit.

7. My little niece is in the Opera program at OC School of the Performing Art |
|
s... :-)
Her voice is amazing - and I'm not saying this because she's my neice - I saw her perform in a recital and I can state with confidence that she's one of the best in the program. I'd love to hear her do the flower song. Say, I'll get her the 'Lakmé' CD for her birthday.

Just had a concert this past week-end. I am constantly amazed that such a little (she's on the short side)person can produce such volume in her voice. She's a mezzo-soprano. She's still too young vocally to be doing much of the really challenging stuff but watching her develop is one of the joys of my life.
We frequently blast the "Opera Babes" in the car when we're toodling around town.

6. Passage in opera that make one take notice. |

I first heard that duet when I was about 16. It was the Joan Sutherland recording of the opera, and I just froze in astonishment at the beauty of it.
