NORTHAMPTON - Former school Superintendent Michael A. Cosgriff has been named the next leader of a small New Hampshire school district, but his new bosses say he must resolve the weapons charges he faces here before his new appointment is finalized.
The Lincoln Woodstock Cooperative School District School Board has given Cosgriff until Aug. 1 to resolve the matter. His trial on improper storage of a large capacity firearm and improper storage of firearms is set to begin in Hampshire Superior Court in September.

Cosgriff, 55, was arrested in June 2004 in connection with a domestic incident at his 3 Beccari Lane home in Southampton. He is facing one count of unsecured storage of a large-capacity firearm and two counts of unsecured storage of a firearm. An initial charge of assault with a dangerous weapon was dropped. Cosgriff has pleaded innocent to all charges.
Judy S. Boyle, chairwoman of the Lincoln Woodstock School Board, said yesterday her board believes Cosgriff was the best candidate for the job but has placed conditions on his hiring.

Boyle said board members were concerned about the charges against Cosgriff but visited Northampton and talked to people here and at other former work sites about his job performance. The board also performed an "extensive" background check, she said.
"What he did in Massachusetts is not illegal in New Hampshire," Boyle said. "Given his experience, we felt he was the best candidate we could pick."
