As Cardinal Ratzinger's endorsement of a book comparing Harry Potter and the lord of the rings regularly stirs long threads in all forums, this question has to be asked.
As usual in such cases, there is no middle ground.

Just damn it.
What is a godless heathen who loves(and is obsessed with) The Lord of Rings suppose to do? I do love Harry Potter, but I love LOTR more. :(

Remember that Tolkien was a DEVOUT Catholic, so it's difficult for Catholic Heiarchy to diss him for being pagan or promoting paganism. He had many discussions (arguments?) with contemporary Catholics on the issue when he was alive.
Ratzinger or no Ratzinger, LotR kicks Harry Potter's ass pagan or otherwise.
