Really cool indie band from Tokyo. They did a split record with Cursive (great band from Omaha) called "8 Teeth To Eat You". Good stuff.

But my favourite Japanese musician has to be Ryuichi Sakamoto.

28. Electric Eel Shock
Saw these guys a couple years ago at the state capitol campus as part of the local "Bands against Bush" event. These guys wear their metal & punk influences proudly both in their music and their looks.

Guitarist looks like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and James Hetfield, if you can imagine that. Sounds like that too with a heavy dose of Tony Iommi distortion thrown in.

Bass player could be the Japanese Dee Dee Ramone

And the drummer. in classic Red Hot Chili Peppers fashion, took the stage wearing nothing but a sock. And this was an exceptionally cold & windy day in October too. I was freezing standing there in my coat. I don't know how this guy retained enough feeling in his hands and feet to play the drums.

Musically, their CD is great. Lyrically.... well let's say it's obvious that English is not their first language. Their new album is out now in Europe and will be released in the US in August, so it will be interesting to see if they have learned more English in their extensive touring.

Great sound. Highly recommended. If you won't take my word for it, ask Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson or Ozzy Osbourne.

Stomu Yamashta's 'Go' was good too. I liked 'Loudness' for a bout five minutes. Still have the vinyl.

31. Not a band, but deserves mentioning - Yamatsuka Eye
Also known as Yamantaka Eye. Member of Boredoms; also performed with Japanese acts Hanatarashi and UFO Or Die as well as American acts such as Naked City, Praxis, Painkiller, and God Is My Co-Pilot. Apparently he's good friends with John Zorn; the two of them released a side project CD called Nani Nani that's delightfully moronic, but also contains one of the most poignant alt-jazz performances I've ever heard (My Rainbow Life).
