Privacy question about internet and phone. |
|
My friend got an e-mail from some obviously fake e-mail address with a picture of her daughter that someone had gotten from elsewhere on the internet and saying that they were going to tell the daughter's school all this stuff about her, etc. Nothing ever happened but my friend wanted to know where the e-mail came from and the ISP folks were no help and basically they won't tell her.
Last night we had another round of 2:00 AM phone pranks (teenager in the house) so we have reset the phone not to accept blocked or unknown calls but I talked to Bellsouth and they gave me the code to report a nuisance call when it comes and after three of them supposedly they make contact with the caller.
Why do these companies work so hard in protecting the identity of people who are up to no good? What are the rights of the folks getting harrassed and annoyed?

I backed out my friend's e-mail address but left the fake one in. Can you make heads or tails of it?

same network by any chance?
If not there isn't much you can do; everything in that header seems to be false. Whoever did this had very good computer knowledge; maybe that will help you find out who it was.
Maybe someone that has more knowledge in this area will be able to get more information from the header.

However, my son is in SF. Anyway, they got this information by right-clicking on the e-mail and properties. She said she would pay $50 to anyone who found out who the perpetrator was but so far none have been found. It was her home computer with a Bellsouth account.

However, it is odd that your son lives in San Francisco and the IP they used to spoof the address came from CNET which is located in San Francisco; probably just a coincidence. The host this email came from is www.xo.com but again, this could be false. Since XO Communications does offer DSL service you might want to try to contact them by phone to see if they can help you. The IP address is 206.173.193.112. Good luck, let me know if you find anything new out with this information.

2. Four or five years ago |
|
I moved into a new place and some bill collectors kept calling my house looking for some guy named Steve something. I kept telling them over and over again that this Steve guy did not live in my house and stop calling me. They kept calling. And they got more obnoxious about it, too. They started calling pretty late (up to 9 at night) and pretty early (as early as 7:30 -8). I finally called Verizon and they said I could do nothing. They didn't even give me that number you are talking about for nuisance calls.
I ended up changing my number.

4. well, when I stalk and harass people |

I use an email routing system, the ISP doesn't know who I am. the phone calls can be considered harrassment, call the police.
