14. There is a downside.

I smoked 2 packs a day for over 20 years. When I came out of surgery on May 29, my oxygen level would not stay up. I was in a special care unit for 3 days hooked up to oxygen and struggling to breath. It was miserable and exhausting. I haven't smoked since. If you don't smoke--don't start. If you smoke--quit before you "have" to.

I smoked, then quit for five years, thats right five fucking years. Last month my mom had surgery and I bought a pack for that day and now I can't stop. I can not stop. By the way I'm new, nice to meet you.

Have all the smokers about to smoke their last cigarrettes package and send via overnight the rest of the pack. That'll give them some sort of ceremonial psycho-babble activity representing their desire to quit, and you free cigarettes.

Why not start smoking? spoze theres all kinds of reasons for doing it, but 1 main one is you don't feel your feelings. It was my reason for starting, AND it was my reason for quitting-- I got into a intense feeling-based therapy where it was far better (& ultimately more satisfying) to allow the emotions to happen and take me where they will.

For almost any problem, assuming your biochemistry isn't too far out of whack, there is a nondrug alternative-- cigarettes were my drug of choice bc it simultaneously acted as stimulant & emotion suppressant. Interestingly Ive found that excercise-- biking, yoga, etc.-- does much the same thing, gives you the endorphin buzz but also provides relief for anxiety and depression (well validated by numerous scientific studies).

The urge to light something and inhale smoke-- nicely satisfied by burning incense.

So, if the reasons for smoking can be addressed by other means that leaves us with only 1 reason, the real reason why most people start smoking and that is to make a fashion statement. You want to be seen as a smoker. If that's the case, well, go right ahead. There is no argument I can think of to counter THAT!
