26. Moving to another area would only be an absolute last resort.
I have family obligations here. (I live in the Philly suburbs).

6. I'm sorry.
I have two jobs (both crappy and neither adds up to a living wage). You can join the many DU'ers that are unemployed or just looking to make more than minimum wage. There are many of us right now.

9. But I literally can't survive on minimum wage
unless it includes very good medical coverage. I have medical needs that I can't do without. I'm sure I'll find something, but it's a little frightening at the moment.

13. Nobody can survive on minimum wage.
You need to COBRA for now on the medical benefits unless you qualify for Medicaid (apply for it in a week or so and find out).
Also, look into programs for displaced workers. Depending on how much funding they have some will pay to send you back to school for further training, pay your necessities, get medical coverage for you and give you a small stipend.
Try that program and see if they can help.

Good luck.

15. Oh, I'm definitely getting the COBRA,
but I have to pay for that, co-payments, and of course food, rent and utilities. I'll be able to get by for a while but it's disheartening to realize how long friends in this field have been out of work. I don't want to have to spend resources I've saved for the future, and it's entirely possible that those resources could run out at some point. I am thinking about looking into some courses to add to my IT skills. Where do I look for displaced worker programs? I'm not sure if I would qualify because, as far as I know, our jobs weren't outsourced overseas, they were eliminated. And they were eliminated by what is, in my mind, a very dishonest organization that seems to have purposely misled us (and our former owner) about their future intentions. :grr:

16. Possibly at Family Services,
an unemployment office or some place of that nature. And if they were eliminated then you should qualify. I knew of a secretary who worked for a well-known food company. The place that she worked at closed down in that town and she qualified for displaced workers program. They sent her to a nursing program and now she is an RN.

8. And I got screwed over on the severence.
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 02:33 PM by drm604
We were purchased by a new company. Today was our first day under the new company. Because of that I've only worked for them one day and don't qualify for severence. If they had done it yesterday I (and all the others who got laid off) would probably have gotten severence.

18. threaten to sue them,
if they help on to you for one day for any reason then to screw you on severence find a lawyer and find a reason. many lawyers will at least talk to you for free the first time.

19. I've been thinking about it.
Maybe we can all do it as a group. I'm not sure which of the two companies we'd have to go after. I guess a lawyer would know that.

22. That is just piss-poor sorry for them to do that.
An ethical company would know that they would have to lay off staff. They should have made that part of the purchase agreement- you lay off the employees before the purchase with all benefits due to them. I would consult an employment lawyer asap! Sometimes I think these people do stuff like this to hurt people- it gives them some sort of thrill. My only hope is it comes right back on them.

28. I guess if I have to be out of work, summer's a good time for it.
But I certainly don't want to milk it. I feel guilty somehow about collecting unemployment, but at the same time I'm damn glad it's there for me. The wingnuts would probably love to attack it but that would be even more politically stupid than attacking Social Security!
