Joan Osbourne ~ If God Was One of Us |
|
If God had a name, what would it be And would you call it to his face If you were faced with him in all his glory What would you ask if you had just one question
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like And would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets
And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home He's trying to make his way home Back up to heaven all alone Nobody calling on the phone Except for the pope maybe in rome
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if god was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make his way home Just trying to make his way home Like a holy rolling stone Back up to heaven all alone Just trying to make his way home Nobody calling on the phone Except for the pope maybe in rome

Just kidding--although lots of wingnuts actually considered it blasphemy to suggest God was "one of us" or even to imagine it. :eyes:

That's really damn funny, seeing how the whole point of their religion is that their god was "one of us" for a few decades during the Roman empire.
Stupid fundies.

Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 10:29 PM by SouthoftheBorderPaul
but One of Us was written by Eric Bazilian who used to be in the Hooters. I think he was in Osbourne's band though.
Slightly off topic but no less distressing: Did you know Lewis Black doesn't write his own rants anymore? Nope, that staff writers at Daily Show write them now. Black says they're "better at doing him" than he is.

18. I've noticed that song seems to drive many people nuts. |
|
another favorite of mine is one by Aaron Neville - this one also seems to make a lot of the people uncomfortable but it shouldn't
To Make Me Who I Am
(Aaron Neville, Gordon Chambers, Robbie Nevil, Bradley Spalter)
I've walked through this world sometimes without a friend My life has been up and down, been close to an end But I've been through the mill And I've paid my dues Walked so many miles in different peoples shoes
But I've been through the fire And I've walked in the rain I've felt the joy and endured the pain
Once I was a schemer But I always was a dreamer But it took me who I was and where I've been To make me who I am
I've met a lot of lost souls in the bowels of hell Traveled some crooked roads, got some stories yet to tell I've shot up with the junkie, in piss stench halls Broken bread with the devil, fallen on my knees to God Some days I was blessed, some nights I was damned But I always tried to lend a helping hand
Once I was a deceiver Not I am a believer But it took me who I was and where I've been To make me who I am
Oh, I've seen the little children, all strung out on dope No one to care about them, living without hope But I've been lucky that I always had a song I'll sing it with compassion, to try to right the wrong.
Once my life was wretched But why should I regret it Cuz, it took me who I was, and where I've been To make me who I am ... Cause I know it took who you were And where you came from To make you what you are

Dreamed about ray charles last night And he could see just fine, you know I asked him for a lullaby He said, ’honey, I don’t sing no more’ No more, no more, no more Ray don’t sing no more
He said, ’since I got my eyesight back, My voice has just deserted me. No ’georgia on my mind’ no more... I stay in bed with mtv.’

Melissa Ethridge seems to be the closest. I sing, and one day I was doing Piece of My Heart with my brother, tried to do it as close to Janis as I could - totally stripped my voice for a week. Nobody can really do Janis, it's dangerous.

What if God Smoked Cannabis? (Parody of One of Us by Joan Osborne) If God had long hair And a goatee And if His eyes were pretty glazed If He looked spaced out Would you buy His story? Would you believe He had an eye infection?
And yeah, yeah, God looks baked Yeah, yeah, God smells good Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah What if God smoked Cannabis? Hit the bong like some of us Drove a Tie-died micro bus And He subscribes to Rolling Stone
When God made this place In the beginning Did He plant any seeds? Or did He put them there For Adam and Eve So they’d be hungry For the apple that the snake Was always offering
And yeah, yeah, God rolls great Yeah, yeah, God smells good Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah What if God smoked Cannabis? Do you suppose He had a buzz When He made the platypus? When He created Earth our home Does He like Pearl Jam or The Stones? And do you think He rolls his own? Up there in Heaven on the throne
And when the Saints go marching home Maybe He sits and smokes a bowlhttp://www.bobrivers.com/audiovault/tunes/tunes.asp?Var=W
