I'm spoiled by the quality of DVDs and all the extras, so I probably wouldn't even watch a legal copy of a film in a theater.

I've seen the quality of some of those copies. They suck bigtime. Besides, the point of seeing a movie, at least the first time, is to experience it in full stereo on as big a screen as is possible, with a bunch of people to make comments to. It's simply not the same thing with a dark, often muddled sound, copy that simply sucks pondwater.
It's not a matter, to me, of legitimacy because it's the way the film actually looks and sounds that makes a difference. In one of my fandoms, people often download episodes of a show to view, but the files are tiny and just the size of the Media Player or Quicktime window. They have dubbed it, appropriately enough, as "squinty vision" because of its size. If I had to view every episode of a TV show in such a manner, I don't think there would be much enjoyment coming from the endeavor.

From what I hear the quality is so bad. The production value and the moral questions make it unprofitable risk

7. If it's a highly anticipated, favorite star film? Are people being honest? |

If someone comes to your house and says "I have Movie X that you've been waiting to come out", how many people would honestly say "Get that thing out of my house!"?
I've only seen one pirated film (it was in theaters though, not before the theatrical release) and the quality was so bad I couldn't believe people regularly watch pirates. It was horrible, I didn't watch it all, and it made me actually *want* to spend the 10 bucks to see it in better color/sound/quality,etc.
BUT--if someone had come to me with King Kong? I don't know what I'd do.

The movies I want to see the most are best seen in a large theater setting, and any movies I don't care about seeing in the theater can wait until they come out on video or PPV. The only pirated copy of a movie I've watched was the Lion King that my sister got somewhere. It was horrible. You could hear people coughing, babies crying, kids screaming, and every time the camera man turned to look at something, he did it through the view finder of the camera. Waiting for a decent copy is much better IMO.

9. which is exactly why movie theaters suck |
|
In the last two movies I have seen, at least two people during each received cell phone calls and proceeded to have 5 minute conversations with their friends. Better to watch at home. Why do you think home media rooms are becoming so popular? To get away from the dipshits in the theaters. Having said all that - I still don't mind waiting for a decent quality product, when the DVD is released.

And lately I only see movies in them if I think I will benefit from the big screen, or if I can't wait for the video. I only see maybe 2 or 3 movies per year in the theater anymore. I also try to go during off-peak times so the theater will be less crowded, thus less noisy.

A friend had a pirated copy of Spiderman 2 she let us borrow, and it was just unwatchable. I don't go to the movies much, just because it's hard to bring LK or find a sitter, but these days the DVD release is usually a short wait.
I know there are legal and ethical issues involved, but I honestly don't even get to that point because the experience of trying to watch a pirated movie is so bad.
