Had Breakfast w/ Pat Robertson
Actually he was at the table next to mine. Let's just say I was staying at a very nice hotel in Houston, and it was definitely him. Taller in person than I had expected. Wanted to clarify his thoughts about 9/11, but felt weird I was the only one in the room not wearing a suit.

2. I saw him several years ago at a yearling sale
in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was there to spend the faithful's money
on expensive race horses. I don't think many people knew that he
had a racing stable. He bought a few horses that cost several hundred
dollars each. None of them could run. One of them he gave away to
someone and after he gave her away she won three races.

My nephew was so outraged that he was there spending the sucker's
money on racehorses that he took his picture and sent it to the
local paper. They weren't impressed.

He is not in the horses business anymore that I know of. I don't
think he liked the publicity of being at the sales and all.

5. He's technically not in the religion business, either
He gave up his ordination when too many people began questioning his extra-curricular activities.

He is/was good buddies and business partners with Samuel K. Doe, the former dictator of Liberia. Besides being a despot, Doe is best known for briefly sheltering bin Laden and al-Qaida in the 1990s after the first WTC bombing.

Just think-- only two degrees of separation between Robertson and bin Laden. Whoulda thunk it?

7. I made a serious typo.
He purchased horses that cost several hundred THOUSAND dollars
each.

I'll never forget that night. He looked so smug and yet his eyes
were darting around hoping not too many people were taking his
picture in the arena. This was before he gave up his ordination.

10. Are there articles or books or something
about this connection. I don't doubt it but would like to bring this to the attention of a fundie friend of mine and would need proof.

Thanks

11. It was in "This Modern World" a few years ago
Also IIRC Greg Palast has done some research and writing on this topic-- mostly on Pat's connections with diamond mining operations in East Africa.

12. Thanks
I've read about his connections to diamond mining and understand the connections that come with that. I wasn't aware of the bin Laden connection though.

14. It's kind of like the "God is Ray Charles" gag
Y'know:
God is Love
Love is Blind
Ray Charles is Blind, therefore
God is Ray Charles B-)

Robertson and Doe are friendly and both invested in the East African mines. Samuel Doe, as Liberian dictator, provided aid and comfort to Al-Qaida in the 1990s.

IIRC there may even be a section in Palast's book "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" about Robertson's connection. Unfortunately, my copy of the book is residing in my house with my soon-to-be-ex-wife, so I can't reference it right now. :(

17. I read the book when it first came out
and don't remember it. I'll have to track down my copy. I'm sure it's somewhere in the piles of books I have.

Mr. Pat, campaigned by religious broadcaster Pat Roberston’s Tega Farm, rallied strong from fifth place to make the lead in the stretch and roll to a 5 1 /4-length victory under jockey Richard Migliore in the fourth race at Aqueduct on Saturday, a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight event for three-year-olds and older.

Robertson said in May that he planned to sell all of his interests in horse racing by the end of the Keeneland November sale due to objections from some of his followers of his participation in the sport...

Patrice Miller purchased Mr. Pat on behalf of Tega Farm for $520,000 at the 2001 Keeneland April two-year-olds in training sale from the consignment of Murray Smith, agent. He originally passed through the sale ring at the 2000 Fasig Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale, where Third Street Partners bought him for $55,000 from the consignment of Eaton Sales agent.

4. Who the hell let him into Texas?
Man, I was enjoying a peaceful, lazy Sunday.

But now that I know evil is in town - I'm feeling a little stressed again.

Seriously, there's been no local news coverage that Patty was in town - so either you're mistaken or he's on covert.

9. Trust me - it was him
Edited on Sun Jul-17-05 06:46 PM by Jack_Dawson
Before I even looked over I heard his voice and his laugh and already knew. A quick glance to the right confirmed it.

Then I went back to feeling self conscious about wearing ripped jeans and a t-shirt to breakfast (perfectly acceptable in California) in a hotel that was apparently housing the south's masters of the universe.

13. I had dinner with Newt Gingrich in a similar manner
I was at the 57th Fighter Group in Atlanta, a restaurant and bar done up like a British WWII air base. Just as our food arrived, someone sat down at the table next to us, and my whole meal was spent trying not to see his face right next to my friend's head. I couldn't escape seeing him unless I stared at my plate. Even then (when he was in congress) I hated his guts with a passion. I wanted to throw food at him.

16. I Would Want To Swear
I would love to swear in the presence of some religious asshole like that.

I am not absolutely positive I would have the nerve to do it; if I were to do it I would want to do it right as I was leaving
