Upbeat update on sweet Sirius
I have a brother who is a radiologist (abdominal specialist) at a hospital-affiliated group in ATL. He has been in Tahiti since right after Sirius' surgery, so he missed most of this. He just returned today. He is convinced that this is nothing more than post-op complications (like human paralytic illius) and a possible stomach ulcer caused by the piroxicam/prednisone changeover without the recommended 72 hour waiting period (the veterinarian went back to the prednisone stat because of the respiratory bleeding .. the bloody coughing stopped, so that was probably a good decision). My brother is adamant that any mass seen radiologically is probably not a tumor (clean excision three weeks ago, surgeon reported clean belly, etc.), but perhaps a hematoma due to the blood-vessel rich nature of hemangiosarcoma or surgical scaring.

My brother agrees that Sirius' days are numbered with a hemangiosarcoma, but not as soon as we may think. I will give Sirius every benefit of the doubt. Dr. DemoTex and I are his only advocates, but we must know when to let the dear boy go. It will probably not be tomorrow.

BTW: The old boy had a strong weekend. He ate well, including some dry dog chow today. He was ecstatic when Dr. DemoTex showed up at the mountain house for Saturday night. She cried all the way down the mountain to Greenville today on the thoughts of losing this great little dog. That was before I talked with my brother.

5. Fingers and now toes
are crossed. I love my dogs (and all my furry friends) more than I can stand and that extends to everyones furries as well. Your long saga with sweet Sirius has been so heart rending and I don't know you at all and Sirius only from your stories and his picture. I am so happy to hear this. Yes his days may be numbered but perhaps you will have the time to make some more fun and that always means so much.

My heart is with you every step of the way. Keep letting us know, I look for your posts with anxiety and tonight I am having a sigh of relief.

Give him and extra scratch in his favorite place from me please and I am blowing kisses from Kansas.

8. Kiss that dog AND your brother for all us Sirius fans!
You know the time is short but how wonderful that it is not as soon as you feared. So good to hear he is feeling better now. Steak the other night prolly didn't hurt! :)

You take care of yourself too! It is good to have more time, but the ups and downs take a toll on the 'caregiver' too. Be nice to Mac along the way!

Thanks for the updates. I am probably not the only one dropping your SN into the search option a time or six a day. Sirius has some fans pulling for him all over the place!

Scritch both yer furry boys for a pal under the Big Sky. The 90 Pound Hound sends his regards too. He has great admiration for elder dog leaders.

11. Good News -- thanks for the update!!!
each day he is with you will be precious.

We also got good news about our little dog -- she has a heart murmur. Turns out that we caught it early and with meds it is treatable.

We didn't want to lose her so soon after we lost our elder dog to cancer -- and we also tried chemo -- but I do believe that she had an adverse reaction to the prednisone. The chemo for her lymphoma was successful -- but the side effects of prednisone was the cause of death.

Sirius has quite a fan club here at DU.
