Poll question: How old were you when you got the chickenpox?
I got them right before my 30th birthday. Worst. Present. Ever.

1. Holy crap!
You must be lucky to be alive! My cousin got them at age 17 and was hospitalized for them.

I had them in 2nd grade. Two weeks of itching but not too bad.

6. It was wacky stuff
Funnily enough, I gave them to my six-month old nephew. He had them a total of two days, and didn't even seem bothered by them.

Me, OTOH, they went down my throat, in my ears, on my eyelids, etc. Nasty stuff.

7. I was 28 and I have never been so ill.
I don't think I will ever be the same. I was sick for nearly a month. My case was still considered mild, but I will never forget being so ill...crawling on the floor to get to the restroom, sick. :scared:

8. hi myrna!
Missed you at the last MN DU gathering! :hi:

Yeah, they're miserable if you get them as an adult. I had to be quarantined for a couple weeks. They had to sneak me in a back door at my clinic because I was so contagious. yech!

9. Hi there.
:hi: Yikes-quarantined! I cannot believe how awful adult chicken pox is.

I haven't been able to make the last few gatherings. Do you guys plan on getting together anytime soon?

I was pleased to learn that Pawlenty's approval ratings are in the toilet. I'd LOVE to learn what Normie's ratings are considering he's Rove's chimney sweep. :hi:

12. Wow, that sounds beyond gruesome. I wonder why
it is so much worse than when you're a little kid. I just remember non-stop (!!!)itching eveywhere and I couldn't sleep and was scratching myself bloody.

15. Adult chicken pox can be fatal,
that is why it is best to have contracted the virus as a child. It really reeks havoc on your immune system. My case was mild, therefore I am fortunate, but that illness really kicked my behind.

17. I hope you do not get them
They can be fatal as an adult. Of course, some people are immune to them because they were exposed at an early age. My ex-wife, for instance, never had a full-blown case of them, but was immune when I was sick with them.

Weird. But then again that's my ex- :P

19. MrsG, you should get the varicella vaccine.
It's recommended for adults who haven't had the disease.

23. I cannot do that because my white cell count is too low because of
immune deficiencies and the possible side affects are not worth it says my Dr. :hi:

you'll feel inclined to murder your doctor with an axe.

18. I got them at age 34
and almost 8 months pregnant with my first child.

Good thing too - because I knew I wasn't immune, I was hyper-vigilant about it so I went to the clinic when the first itchy blister appeared. Spent the night in the hospital with a big warning sign on my door.

21. Around the age of 15-16
Unfortunately for the people around me, the early stages didn't look too different from a pimple breakout so until we realized it was chicken pox I probably spread it to a couple of other people in my high school.

WORST. FEVER. EVAH.

NO amount of blankets seemed to stop me from shivering. I went to a shower, set the water to "instant cook" and it STILL felt like ice.

My younger sister was maybe 6 wks old, and both the kids we spent time with (our parents worked opposite shifts and swapped child care) had them too.

LK had them at two, a friend's kid got them (within a year of getting the vaccine :eyes: ) and gave them to LK. Her kid was miserable, LK had a really minor case.

I missed three weeks of school. Except for recovery from surgery, probably the sickest I've ever been. It was bad. :(

29. I got them when I was 4
I has to stay home from the preschool program that I was in. I was itchy but I wasn't really that sick. My younger sister didn't manage to catch them from me. She was much sicker than I had been when she got them at the age of 12. I have heard that the older that you are when you get them, the sicker you get.

30. I got them in my early 20s
I was afraid I was going to die--and at the same time, I hoped I would. That's how bad it was. They knocked me on my a$$ for almost an entire month.

It was easily the sickest I've been in my whole life.

33. I got them when I was around 12 and i got them the same time as my mom
who got them for the first time at age 42. We both took zovirax and neither of us got sick at all. For me it just felt like a bunch of mosquito bites that lasted not even a week. Not a horrible experience like getting my wisdom teeth taken out and having 2 dry sockets. That was by far the worst pain i have experienced in my life.
