We're a blue state with a Democratic governor and two Democrats in the Senate.

We're home to the reigning world champions in NCAA softball, and Super Bowl XL in January.

What's not to like?

on edit: John Conyers also calls Michigan home!

to run.

Or was it the Detroit News?

Now that pursuit of the 2006 Republican nomination for governor has taken what is likely to be final form -- businessman Dick DeVos a prohibitive favorite (barring an unlikely challenge from risk-averse Congresswoman Candice Miller) over two relatively unknown state lawmakers, Sen. Nancy Cassis and Rep. Jack Hoogendyk -- it seems like a good time to talk about another candidate who almost certainly won't get in the race and, if he did, more than almost certainly could not win.

We refer, of course, to semi-famous guitarist and hunter Ted Nugent.

One can never be quite sure how seriously to take anything that comes out of Uncle Ted's mouth, but he recently told interviewers he was "getting real close to deciding to run" for governor. That follows a vow made during the 2002 campaign to run in '06 if Democrat Jennifer Granholm was elected.

He's since moved to Texas, but when we asked six months ago, a Nugent spokeswoman said the anti-Granholm pledge had not been retracted.

Nugent's periodic flirtation with public office often seems to conveniently coincide with the promotion of his other interests, concert tours, hunting and gun rights (he's been on the board of the National Rifle Association for 10 years). But let's assume for a minute that he's serious about being Michigan's governor. There are a few things it would be nice to know.

For one, is Ted Nugent a Republican?

But the football team is overrated. Watch out on the trip to Kinnick this year. We want to make it 3 out of 4 years. LOL, actually Michigan is my second favorite Big Ten team. Just don't let any other Hawkeyes find out.

5. Not Sure
My sister-in-law lives there with her family, and they seem to like it just fine, but then again they are white, living in a white neighborhood.

Just read a thread that Blacks don't seem to be doing well in moving out of a city like Detroit, into suburbia, and being accepted by the good people of no pigment.

Granted, you have a Democratic governor and the two Senators, but all that kind of means very little if racism is still something to be
expected, especially from a Blue State.

11. checking in
Michigander here. Land of Lakes. It's a Paradise except for the screaming me-me's who can't see anything without wanting to f**k it somehow.

On a positive note our food co-op is looking to expand because of increased business, it's hard to find a parking spot at the local farmers market and there's a farmer their who works his land with horses.

24. I've lived in Michigan almost all of my life.
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 11:32 PM by caty
I lived in Tennessee for 2 years when I was in my 20's. The winters were great, but the summers were awful. In Michigan we have our fair share of hot weather, but with very few days getting over 95 degrees. Our winters vary. We have mild ones and we have some pretty bad ones. Our 2 worst months are January and February. We have few tornadoes and very few earth tremors. We have some bad storms with winds bad enough to knock down some trees. But, for the most part, our weather is pretty mild.
However, our roads are the pits. And, sometimes I mean that literally.
I don't want to get into politics because, like all states, that can change from election to election.
But, for the most part, Michigan is a good place to live. We have it all here. Water and snow skiing, lots of lakes for boating, many areas of state land for camping, many beautiful towns and cities, and some excellent medical facilities. I can't think of a better place to live when you consider that no matter where you live, there is always an upside and a downside.

32. Is it okay if I like parts of Michigan
(the U.P., Ann Arbor, Mackinac Island, Isle Royale) and not others (Detroit, Frankenmuth)?

I don't like Detroit because it is Exhibit A of a city destroyed by slavish devotion to the automobile.

I don't like Frankenmuth because I don't like kitsch, especially when a bunch of descendants of German immigrants who probably don't even speak German anymore build a "Bavarian" town on some of the flattest land in the country.

35. I've lived all over the world, but am still proud to call Michigan home...
Was born in CT, spent years 4 to 13 in East Lansing, spent 13 to 18 living in various spots around the world (dad's job). Did a year at MSU, a year at Richmond University in London and two at American University in Paris.

I could have moved anywhere, really, but decided to come back to Michigan, one of the few places I ever stayed long enough to develop roots, as interrupted as they were. I've never regretted it.

Michigan has its disadvantages, but I think they are far outweight by the advantages. A few of the things I love about Michigan:

You're never more than 2 hours away from a major body of water (recreation, camping, etc...)

Geographic diversity (forests, dunes, meadows, cliffs, waterfalls, lakes)

A wonderful governor (GO Jennifer!)

Ann Arbor

East Lansing

The Lelenau Peninsula

You can show people on your hand where you're from
