I'm moving and DSL will cost me $30.00 per month but I'm also on a budget and don't know if it's worth the money.

Any opinions will be welcome and thanks.

1. Once you've had high-speed, it's painfull to go back.

10. Pretty much says it all. And once you have high-speed
service, your internet habits will probably change. So the 2 hours you spend now will probably expand as you start accessing higher bandwidth content.

2. If you're only on 2 hours a day, probably not.
Do you do many downloads? It's been a LONG time since I've had dial up but I understand it takes a VERY LONG TIME for any download on a dial-up connection.

The other thing I think you should consider is what's happening now with this admin, the investigation, the rumors etc. Do you really think you'll still only be on the net for only 2 hours?

My cable connection costs me $49.99 a month. I only wish I oculd find DSL for $30.00! Most of the Dial-up connections I heard about are very close to $30 a month. If you're only talking about a few $$, you have to decide if it's worth it or not.

Personally, I'd be LOST without my cable connection!!!!

5. That really depends on what you want to do during those two hours
If you're into downloading or viewing images then it may well be worth it for you. If you spend that time on forums (such as DU) checking your mail, etc. You may be happy with dial up.

11. CANDY!!!! Stop that! I don't know how old dirt is, but I'm 62.
I know some of the dirt in my garden is newer than that!

I can tell you, I would be lost without my conversations, arguments, and information on DU every day! I spend WAY too much time on here (thinking logically), but I love every minute!

I'm retired too. Not by choice, but because of a med. problem, but that doesn't matter. I love DU, Ebay, Rawstory, and all those places where I get real enjoyment every day.

How much would your dial-up connection cost you?

13. I'm paying $30.00 for dial-up now but the brand new condo/apartment
that I'm buying uses the telephone for the entry system and if someone came to visit they would get a busy signal if I was on-line.

I'm really a novice and assumed that the DSL would be on top of the ISP charge.

By the way,I'm 72----a Depression Baby.

15. Check on the cost of DSL and cable at your new condo.
If you pay for DSL or cable they are your ISP (internet service provider) so it's not in addition to your $30.00. I understand your concern about visitors getting a busy. I had a fellow worker friend who lived in one of those high buck gated communities. When you approached the gate, you were supposed to dial their # to gain access. He had a 16 year old son who was always on the internet, and that was before the popularity of DSL or cable, and it was a real PIA!

The high speed internet access is probably going to cost more than dial-up. It is not in addition to the dial-up cost, so you're going to have to decide if it's worth it. Remember, you can be on line with the DSL/cable and it does not affect your phone at all, it's a completely different system.

12. I've had cable Internet since about 2001, and
when I went visiting my mother and stepfather and had to use dialup to access my e-mail and DU, it was p-a-i-n-f-u-l.

DU alone has enough images and long threads to make it worthwhile to get broadband.

14. That's a good price but then I'm addicted to the Internets.
Think about how many more sites you could see in the two hours you spend a day. Don't get cable TV. You'll have more fun. JMO

17. Look into "package" deals.
My DSL + my regular phone line (unlisted, with caller ID) + my long distance (cheapo plan, because I don't call LD much) all together only cost me $50 /month. The power of combination....

I'm paying $60 / month for cable. It's good but it's freaking expensive.

19. With high-speed, you'll be on the net 6 hours a day.
It's worth it, if what you do on your computer requires a lot of internet activity.
