And you made me waste my 5000th post on clarifying a statement, when I had a two thousand word screed tying Bush to depictions of bestiality on ancient Grecian pottery, ready to go in celebration.

missing out on topic headings like, "THE MINOTAUR--MORE BULL THAN JUST ABOVE THE SHOULDERS AND WHAT IT HAS TO DO WITH BUSH'S NUMEROUS PRIVATE SCREENINGS OF 'CLASH OF THE TITANS'"
Garden State: Good, but not great.

45. I am using my 500th post to state my love for Garden State |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 06:43 PM by LeftyDarthBrodie
the movie not the actual Garden State, not so much anymore atleast.
Great is a word used in connection with movies way too much, in my opinion. The only movie(s) to come out the past five years that deserve that adjective already is the LOTR trilogy.

If you like your outcast movies to have a less wry tone, I recommend "Ghost World" and "American Splendor."

I actually thought Ghost World had tongue a bit in cheek. Not terribly, but.

that isn't necessarily a perv thing. Depends on your motivation, I suppose.
I like teen movies now for some reason because it is fun to look back on that time with some distance.

34. but that's what suburban living is all about |
|
there is a lot of stuff about the facade of "pretty life" vs. the frustration underneath...
couple of subtle catwoman references... note when they go to the mailbox & pull out a mag with michelle pfeiffer on the cover... later she goes into the porn shop & pulls out the latex catwoman mask

42. I didn't grow up in the suburbs |
|
small town girl here... so I guess I don't totally get suburban alienation all that well. Although they did remind me of friends of mine from the punk scene. Sort of that bored/ ennui/ Not yet come to frution thing.
And the film looked like they lived in a fairly cosmo town ( or was it LA masquerading as Kansas, or Oregon?)
I think there is a homage to David Lynch as well.

27. Yes, but consider the perspective |
|
True, in the first act of "Ghost World," the two protagonists were the most cynical creatures in town, but the film itself never betrays its objective POV. There's a grace and naturalism to "Ghost" and "Splendor" that I just don't see in "Garden State."
Still, Portman makes an indelible impression in a couple of her first scenes.

I thought Paul Giamatt did a great job!
I had a friend who used to love Pekar's work and at the time, I didn't really like it. I suspect I didn't really "get" it at the time, since I was too much a pampered student then. But now, Pekar's work really speaks to me and is incredibly insightful.
