I know a lot of people still like them, I only like watching the riders getting whipped around.
Thoughts on the rodeo?

1. Nothin' beats a good prison rodeo!
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 01:39 PM by kenny blankenship
WHere convicts try to snatch a 20 dollar bill from between the horns of el toro.

"Convict poker". Last one up from the table gets to keep the pot. Prison rodeo is better than the regular kind because it's features cruelty to people, which means it has 2 types of degrading cruelty compared to just one type for normal rodeo.

3. DakotaDemocrat
Four nights of rodeo last week. 108 degrees one day. Funny seeing all the cowboys gawking at me like I was a freak, since I was wearing shorts. I didn't know long sleeve shirts, a cowboy hat, blue jeans and boots were more comfortable than a tshirt and shorts in 100= degree weather. I never made the connection...

Anyway, great time. Little kids falling off sheep is always fun.

4. Former bull rider
I grew up with them. Most animals are treated very well for a few seconds of work. Usually, the roping events and everything have real world practicability. I'm ambivalent about it all, because it depends on the people involved with the care and everything. Riding bulls was a lot harder on me than it was on the bulls I can tell you that. :)

10. Collegiate rodeo is dumb.
The women's roping event is a test of their skill in lassoing a goat that has been chained to the center of the arena.

11. I don't understand how people think it's fine
It just seems to me to be cruel, but maybe I am too much of a sap. I do laugh my ass off when the riders get knocked on their ass. Not because I want to see them hurt, just because it seems to balance out the scales.

12. I think it's not-so-funny that the men get to rope steers...while the
womenfolk have to lasso a tethered goat. A goat. They go baa and eat cotton.

13. Letterman went on and on last night about how "great" rodeos are...
Until I wanted to slap him silly.

Sure, I watch him once in a blue moon and then he does that.

14. I enjoy rodeo
I used to know a family that provided animals for rodeos and they were very well cared for. They didn't perform out of fear or cruelty but knew their jobs and actually seemed to enjoy them, for the most part. Those jobs were very brief in the course of a day and certainly seemed no crueler than say, sled dog racing, sheep tending or any other work people do with their animals.

17. Males....
How would you like your nuts strapped up in a vice grip?

It's a horrible "sport", and I have promised myself to NEVER go and see another one....I refuse to be part of something like that.

18. Don't like 'em.
Frightened animals risking injury and death to glorify the riders.

However, death isn't the goal, and the riders are certainly accepting a serious risk themselves. It seems marginally more like a sport than does bullfighting, and at least carries the excuse that it develops skills still needed in some jobs.

19. Stupid and cruel...
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 01:08 PM by friesianrider
I had an Appaloosa mare who was a rodeo horse - she was CRAZY and had been massively abused while in rodeo. She eventually became the sanest, most gentle horse ever (could put a 3-year-old on her nad not worry) but it took me nearly 10 years building trust with her to get there.

I've been to many, many, many rodeos and have never seen anything different. It is the same crap at every damn one: animals being treated like total garbage by men with big egos and small penises. Rodeos are as stupid and cruel as bullfighting, they only masquerade as slightly more kind.
