What is wrong with some people? Seriously. |
|
Why would someone else praying EVER offend you? Unless they are praying for you to die. WTF? What if I got offended that you didn't pray? See how silly that is?

2. Yes, I have to be careful. |

Some get offended when I say, "That family's in my prayers."
And I'm no Conservative Hardrightwinger Christian.
I'm a person who believes that Spirit is within, and that I'm sending healing energy.

11. They shouldn't. That is your deal. If you want to pray, it shouldn't |
|
offend anyone else. If you tried to make someone else pray, that is different. You shouldn't have to hide the fact that you pray.

...but the only people around started praying instead of calling 911, I might be offended by that.
Sounds reasonable, no?

|
If not..as a gay woman, I've had a fundamentalist that I work with tell me she prayed for me everyday because I was gay and would not go to heaven when I died. I told her I prayed for her daily because she was a homophobic bigot using her religion to put people down that she didn't approve of.

32. Sounds to me like appropriate measures were taken and the people |
|
standing around praying were doing so because there was really nothing else they could do. Whether you call it prayer, good intentions, well wishes, transcendental meditation, sending good vibes or whatever...it's what people do when they cannot control a situation and must leave it in the hands of professionals..no...if someone is praying for my survival AFTER paramedics have been called and my physical and emergency needs are being attended to in the moment, then, of course, I wouldn't be offended.

If they asked me to join them in prayer repeatedly, after I had already respectfully declined, I might start to get agitated.
That HAS happened to me, BTW.

22. Why would someone else praying EVER offend you? |
|
This one's easy. And on my mind a lot currently because it keeps happening in relation to a dear friend of mine that was in an accident that resulted in the death of her 3 year old - and who is going thru more shit than you could EVER imagine.
Why would it offend? Example:
Jesus, please help XXXXX be strong in his/her time of difficulty. Help them know you will always be with them, Lord, and help give them faith by entering their hearts so they may know you and the peace you offer.
blah blah blah - you get the idea. THAT's when/why someone's praying offends me. I find it fucking despicable to use someone's grief and tragedy to cram religion down their throat.
There is a way to pray for someone and NOT be offensive. Many people haven't figured out the art of doing so. (probably none of which frequent DU)

personal choices folks,if it dosent hurt you, respect it.

when it was done to me a few years ago.
We had a secretary at work (my other job) who was a complete basket case. I had never met a more messed up individual in my life (I won't go into details here).
Her SERIOUS instability was well known in the office, and she had latched onto Jesus with a fervor I've rarely seen in my LIFETIME. You could not say a word to this woman without it coming back to Jesus, or God, or prayers or whatever. I couldn't say anything to her without it ending in "I'll pray for you."
This was a federal office building, and her remarks became more and more improper every time I saw her.
Finally, one day I just snapped, "I don't want your damned prayers. When you get a handle on your OWN life, THEN worry about telling God all about mine."
She stopped after that. THAT'S why. FSC

39. It only offends me if it's done in lieu of something productive |
|
You know, praying that someone finds a job instead of helping them with their rent or giving them an interview outfit or something.
It's my observation that most people pray when they've exhausted all other possibilities, or else in conjunction with actively responding.
I'm an atheist, but I even pray once in a while, in desperate moments... just in case.
