8. It's honestly hard to choose
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 01:17 AM by XemaSab
"Heart Cooks Brain" is my favorite song, and I'd frankly be hard pressed to pick between "Moon and Antarctica," "Lonesome Crowded West," and "Building Nothing Out of Something" for one album to take to ye olde desert island.

But that one part from Cowboy Dan.... that's good livin'

And I gots to say, "Interstate 8," among other songs, reminds me of every good birding road trip I've ever been on.

"100 miles" reminds me of every less-than-good trip.

4. "and I was gripped...by that deadly pahntom..."
It's from a Clash song, and it's so evocative. The song could go anywhere from there.

Also, from Nick Cave's "O'Malley's Bar":

"And with an ashtray as big as a fucking really big brick, I split his skull in half".

It's just so hilariously delivered, and the thought that this ashtray is so big he can't quite describe it without comparing it to a "fucking really big" something else is pretty funny.

"If you're in heaven then you'll forgive me dear, 'cause that's what they do up there...if you're in hell, what can I say? You probably deserved it anyway..." from "Idiot Prayer" by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

And this, the whole thing...sort-of spoken-word set to music, really...

"9th & Hennepin" - Tom Waits

Well it's Ninth and Hennepin
All the doughnuts have names that sound like prostitutes
And the moon's teeth marks are on the sky
Like a tarp thrown all over this
And the broken umbrellas like dead birds
And the steam comes out of the grill
Like the whole goddamn town's ready to blow...
And the bricks are all scarred with jailhouse tattoos
And everyone is behaving like dogs
And the horses are coming down Violin Road
And Dutch is dead on his feet
And all the rooms they smell like diesel
And you take on the dreams of the ones who have slept here
And I'm lost in the window, and I hide in the stairway
And I hang in the curtain, and I sleep in your hat...
And no one brings anything small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
"One for every year he's away", she said
Such a crumbling beauty, ah
There's nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix
She has that razor sadness that only gets worse
With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by
And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet
'til you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin
And you spill out over the side to anyone who will listen...
And I've seen it all, I've seen it all
Through the yellow windows of the evening train...

12. there are several lines in this song that resonate with me
well really....the whole song does

HEJIRA

I'm traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe
A defector from the petty wars
That shell shock love away
There's comfort in melancholy
When there's no need to explain
It's just as natural as the weather
In this moody sky today

In our possessive coupling
So much could not be expressed
So now I'm returning to myself
These things that you and I suppressed
I see something of myself in everyone
Just at this moment of the world
As snow gathers like bolts of lace
Waltzing on a ballroom girl

You know it never has been easy
Whether you do or you do not resign
Whether you travel the breadth of extremities
Or stick to some straighter line
Now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock
They're either going to thaw out or freeze
Listen...
Strains of Benny Goodman
Coming thru' the snow and the pinewood trees
I'm porous with travel fever
But you know I'm so glad to be on my own
Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger
Can set up trembling in my bones
I know - no one's going to show me everything
We all come and go unknown
Each so deep and superficial
Between the forceps and the stone

Well I looked at the granite markers
Those tribute to finality - to eternity
And then I looked at myself here
Chicken scratching for my immortality
In the church they light the candles
And the wax rolls down like tears
There's the hope and the hopelessness
I've witnessed thirty years
We're only particles of change I know, I know
Orbiting around the sun
But how can I have that point of view
When I'm always bound and tied to someone
White flags of winter chimneys
Waving truce against the moon
In the mirrors of a modern bank
>From the window of a hotel room

I'm traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe
A defector from the petty wars
Until love sucks me back that way

Not a line but a couplet, but still. Richard Thompson, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning." Just try not to cry.

Anal-retentive edit: Apparently on the lyric sheet, it's "slipped her the keys." On the live version I have (the record with David Byrne), I'm pretty sure it's the way I have it on the subject line, but I may be mistaken.

Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings,
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down.
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

OK, so it's more than 1 line. I love the entire song, but that verse just stands out to me.
