1. Probably. If PC was 'rebuilt', your drive was likely changed or formatted |

in which case, all files likely gone. Use the iTunes utility to search machine for audio files.
Sorry...

6. You CAN use the iPod as a backup |
|
You just have to change your settings to manual update. That way, when you plug in, the iPod doesn't automatically delete those songs which are no longer in your iTunes. I know this doesn't help you now, but it may be good to know in the future.

I just bought a new computer and want to stick iTunes on it, without losing my library. I was about to send my files via my network, but this might be easier.

9. Oh, I'll definitely keep my library on my old computer. |
|
I'm not ditching my desktop, I just bought a new laptop. I may not bother with it, but then...I might. It would be nice to have my music with me, without bringing the iPod.

The iTunes database can get disconnected from the program, so the songs may be there, but iTunes just doesn't know where to find them. You can search for MP3 files and re-add them to iTunes. You probably lost your playlists and/or song ratings though, unless you can find the old database (or a backup -- you DID do a backup before getting rebuilt, right?) and relink it to iTunes.
Did you lose your other document files (your personal stuff -- photos, letters, etc.)? If not, your iTunes should be there someplace.
