HSE statement on €1 million payment error

The Health Service Executive has blamed a combination of human error and procedural gaps for a payment of €1 million being made by mistake to a health worker.

The HSE said that the error in a new computerised payment system occurred over a year ago.

It was earlier reported that the payment was spotted by the recipient and was not identified by the payroll computer system which cost €120m to install.

So, what would YOU do?

2. I'm not sure the legal ramifications...

...but just because a glitch rewards you with money does not mean you get to keep it. I'm pretty sure fraud applies if you actually spend any of it or try to launder it.

Besides.. if someone thinks something like that won't get traced then they're stupid.

4. Yes. Especially such a high amount.

They WILL notice such a high amount. Better report it upfront.

It's the little, 1-5k mistakes that tempt me. (Although my damn honest streak makes me report those as well.) I know, as I've been in that position, and made good on it.

5. Turns out the system is so fucked it couldn't pick it up

Once the worker reported it they went through their records and found that they've been overpaying lots (maybe hundreds) of workers by smaller amounts, sometimes up to 9-10,000

7. Well, I always think of a book I read called

"Finders Keepers". Fecking funny and very sad.

They made a movie on it with John Cusack, but the book was much better.
