21. Actually I prefer the company of women to men |
|
...most of the time. I was raised by a single mother, and consequently never got into that overcharged masculinity thing. I don't like most sports (can't stand them on TV), I don't know how to fix an engine, and I totally botched my home remodelling tasks. Hell, I can't even change the oil in my car! :P
However, I do enjoy reading poetry (esp. the love poems of Pablo Neruda-- OUT LOUD), playing music, writing, a good foreign film and snuggling on the couch-- especially on a cold day. Or even a warm day for that matter.
Yeah, so I'm not manly. But I am sensitive, caring, compassionate and a hell of a good lover (or so I've been told). :D

I quit school sports because I can't stand that insipid and pathetic locker room culture. That kind of mentality is so ridiculous and foolish it boggles my mind. However, it doesn't take Mr. Big Man to fix a car or house or whatnot; those people are just egotistical and self-absorbed, I think most manual workers are humble in regard to their jobs.

118. I find some of this confusing, yet fascinating-- |
|
I don't get this at all though--
"However, it doesn't take Mr. Big Man to fix a car or house or whatnot; those people are just egotistical and self-absorbed,"
I am an engineer--and I love to fis things--I just got done fixing my mothers screen door and tinkering with my sisters car--I honestly did not do it because I am egotistical or self-absorbed--I jsut enjoy fixing things.
This may be stereotypical masculine behavior--however if I am happy, and they are happy (they do NOT enjoy fixing things) then I don't see how it is a bad thing (?).
My philosopy is to accept people for what they are--and love them and be good to them--I am a masculine man and I have excellent relationships with all the women in my life. I don't apologize for liking sports and enjoying fixing things---I like who I am and I am comfortable in my skin.

123. You completely misunderstood me |
|
I said that a lot of people try to fix things just 'cause it's the "manly" thing to do. I later said that people who really do manual work are humble and not caught up in a testosterone rush.
For instance, I LOVE playing sports, but the locker room culture that goes hand and hand with High School teams is ridiculous to me (racism, sexism and insipid attitudes are just a part of it). I was talking about people who are self-absorbed with themselves and nothing else, and this seems to be very prevalent in the HS teams I have been a part of. I'm not insulting people who play sports AT ALL, but people who act in this manner in relation to sports.
It's definitely not the act of fixing things I was insulting, far from it. I was criticizing people who act like they are the "big guy" when they occasionally fix things or play sports. It's the attitude, not the action.

I think I am starting to take things a little personally--I am an admitted jock and I like doing a lot of stereotypical masculine things--like fixing things, working on the car etc.
But--I am not a masculine jerk--I treat all the people who I care about as if they are royalty (from my grandparents on down).
This whole discussion that has been going on for days makes me feel ashamed, it seems that us "sensitive" DUer kind of men don't seem to have women figured out anymore than the Neanderthals do.
I do my best to love the people in my life to treat them with kindness and compassion and to accept them just the way they are (all women and all men have different needs and want different things).
My plea to the women out there--please realize that most of us men are hopelessly clueless--yes--even the ones who are trying to do their best. So if you could please--just try to forgive us some of our mistakes and try to give second chances to men who seems like they could be worthy. (but--if a guy is a complete and total jerk--show no mercy--teach him a lesson because he gives all the rest of us a bad name.
Peace to all.

|
when "feminazi" is so much easier to understand? After, feminism is all about man-hating, isn't it?:sarcasm:
Misandry is one of my favorited underused English terms. When one of the troglodytes in my extended family makes the mistake of using 'feminazi' in my presence, I tell them I'm not sure what a feminazi is, would that refer specifically to a misandrist, a Sapphist, or just any woman with the quaint notion that women deserve equal protection under the law? This is usually met with some mumbling about "overeducated liberal elitist blah blah blah."

I've yet to meet a feminist who thinks it's about man-hating, although I have met women who won't call themselves feminists because they think it implies misandry.
As for the so-called feminists who do think so, well, there are always people who glom onto a cause for the wrong reasons.

most feminists are not man haters.
All they want is for women to have the same freedom and dignity that men do.
They spend more time being motivated by real issues such as the attack on abortion rights and preventing rape, and less time motivated by minor things that pale in comparison.

110. the reason women today don't call themselves feminists |
|
is because
1. Many feminist ideas have already been integrated into normal society, so to these younger people, feminism is nothing radical. Its ideas are normal. Hence they have no need to identify as feminists.
2. The "feminism" that they do see are the radicals, who spend their time attacking men over minor things that if they actually thought about them in the broad context of pressing issues, aren't really issues. These are the people that fuel Rush Limbaugh's hateful tirades, which sadly get misdirected against real feminists.

113. There is no excusing the use of feminazi |
|
I don't care how many women have attacked men over what males think are minor things. Any man who uses that as a defense of hateful tirades has some issues with women's roles in general. If you don't believe me, substitute the same argument for people who go off on hateful tirades about minorities or gays. They use the same sort of arguments to justify their hateful language.
Concerning your other point, 'radical' was the common adjective attached to feminist thought in the '60s and '70s by people who were terrifed to change the status quo. All progressive movements are radical in there nature. Some notions become accepted, some don't, but all of them rock the boat.

|
I don't use the term feminazi. Nazis are right wing. In any movement, there are those who are more extreme, it is a fact of life. There are exreme liberals, extreme conservatives, extreme feminists, extreme Christian fundamentalists.
The extremists are unhelpful to the overall movement and need a good dose of thought about the effects of what they are doing. They give their respective movements a bad name (and belittle them) with their actions.
For example: saying all heterosexual sex is rape = extreme saying pornography is equivalent to rape = exreme

Extremism is another topic. All extremists are radicals but not all radicals are extremists. As for the effects of extremist thought on a movement, that's another thread altogether.

sometimes you are honest. that is HUMAN nature. and women are HUMANS, not deities.
Some women are not honest with themselves about what they want.
Note: the object of feminism should not be to deify women (to say they are morally perfect), it should be to assure their equal status in society.

you were ready to beat me over the head because I implied women may be dishonest.
So are you of the mind that women never lie?
If you are not of that mind, how do you explain your response?
If you don't mean to deify women, then what criticism of women is allowed? If none, then how is that not deification?

generally, gods were considered to be morally perfect and thus not subject to criticism. However, humans are considered to be failible and thus able to be criticised.
Thus if you cannot criticize women, you are likening them to gods.

first, you jumped to a huge conclusion. where in my response do you see me getting ready to beat you over the head? did you conclude that because you have decided that all women are feminazis just waiting to pounce on you for daring to criticize our gender?
and secondly...there is a huge difference between implying that women, as a gender, are liars, and saying that individuals are prone to not telling the truth. surely you can see that.

there are exceptions to everything, but sometimes those are left unstated and assumed in casual conversation.
For example, if I say that New York is always cold in the winter, you might be able to find a couple of days where New York is not cold. But it doesn't discredit my statement in the context of casual conversation, because everyone knows there are always exceptions.
sure there are some women who will be honest about what they look for in a man. but many of them just aren't honest with themselves.
If I have to give legalistic answers for everything let me know.

What utter bullshit. LOL... Comparing odd warm days in a New York winter to a few honest women amongst us all.
Well, here's an honest one. And every other woman I know personally here on DU is also honest... the few obviously dishonest women here I'm not even sure are women, and they sure aren't my friends. I'm afraid your numbers are WAY off.

You just hurt your own credibility.
I only said that many women aren't honest with themselves in regards to what they want in a man.
and you turn that into me saying that women are dishonest and there are very few honest women. that is not what I said.
But I guess the truth interferes with your protest session against the evil patriarchy :eyes:

I am no longer dealing with people who do not listen to reason.
You, and people like you are hurting feminism through your incessant hostility to things you don't even understand and that you twist around so that it becomes evidence that women are victims of the evil males, so you can look powerful and strong fighting the evil bastards.
Real feminists should be ashamed of you.

they really like men (or other women, depending on their proclivities) who will listen to them.
And who will understand that what they're saying is important.
Just my opinion, based on having known a number of women...and of course, subject to change, alteration, and / or derision by those who happen to be women.
I'm just an observer, and this is just an observation, after all.
