17. We went to The Silver also.
Is the Roth the one that was on Georgia? And then there was the Silver Spring East on Bonifant.
I love going to the Silver again now that it is a part of the AFI.

6. RKO Orpheum, The Virginia, the Realto, Art
The first two were old vaudeville houses, very classy. The Marx Brothers used to play in them, and Harpo said it was in Champaign IL (town where these are) where he first went silent on stage.

Where the clerk one matinee informed me that I could not "love" M & M s because they are inanimate, devoid of spirit, and thus incapable of giving or receiving any love from me.

The first of many harsh (and often enough wondrous) lessons of love that I have encountered this lifetime (all absolutely worth it, I hasten to add).

It wasn't really in my neighborhood, but it was in the same ZIP code. (Even that may not be true, but it was walkable. All I remember seeing there was "Oliver," though.)

11. The Latchis
Cool old art deco theater. This is a detail of one of the many wall friezes - the main theater features a cool ceiling with the constellations all over it and there's a patterned marble (I think) floor in the lobby. Always loved the place and it's since been restored.

The Granada in Bluefield, WV. There were also the State Theater and the Colonial Theater. The Granada got the first run movies. The Colonial got the next ones and the State played the B movies. All were downtown within walking distance.

It burnt in 1986. Showed more artsy films, and they had a great sci-fi marathon! It's now a strip of retail stores at 1001 Mass Ave.

19. The Roosevelt
Scranton, PA. Saturday matinees. Then, in the 70s, it briefly turned into an X rated theater. Got the moms all up in arms and they protested every night. We kids helped carry the signs.

I was about 12 and it was so funny to see the men skulk their way past the protesters into the theater.

Went back to regular movies and closed a few years later. It was a beautiful theater.

23. Mt. Baker Theatre, Sehome Cinemas, Viking Twin.
Mt. Baker Theater- "E.T.", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Ghostbuster's II." It's a beatiful old theatre, big chandelier, stage, balcony. It's still there but they've turned it into a fancy pants overpriced stage theater.

Sehome Cinemas- "Annie" "The Black Cauldron" "Care Bears-The Movie." It's still there. Shows typical movies.

Viking Twin- "Ghostbuster," "Back to the Future," "Time Bandits." It's long gone.

24. The Manor in Norwood, PA!
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 06:34 PM by MarianJack
My mom and I would go in the early 60's when the feature changed every Wednesday. I also LOVED those great movies they would make specifically for kid's matinees that were often clips from old silent movies! Those gave me a love of silent movies that continues to this day!

When I was in my teens, I took a lot of dates to the Eric Terminal in the 69th street terminal in Upper Darby, PA and to the Tower (before it became rock concerts only).

The Manor & Eric are LONG GONE. I don't know, but the Tower may still be doing concerts.

Thanks for the nostalgic question, ohiosmith!

On Edit:

There were also several drive-ins, which are a distant memory in most of the country, but we still have 5 here in Maine!
