Poll question: Do you genuinely hate or genuinely love humanity?
I genuinely love humanity but boy do I get angry at yours and mine at times

1. I think it was Linus who said
"I love humanity. It's people I can't stand."

6. Humanity in general, I love.
Most humans in particular I can do without. THe misanthropy and cynicism of this I think you can put down to frustrated idealism...I keep wanting to believe that people are better, that they'll do the right thing given the chance...and I keep getting disappointed.

9. I was leaning toward the opposite
I hate the "rat race" aspect of the world (and you can get a negative view of people by reading the news) - but I love the people that I know. (Ok - some of them drive me crazy - but in general...)

14. Faith in humanity is essential.
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 01:30 AM by cprise

At least the sort that holds up our potential to be good... on balance.

Anyone who cannot manage that on most days is probably sabotaging any political movement they associate with, not to mention our very future.

Put another way: Misanthropy is antisocial political death. We have no choice but to believe in humankind is we want to be successful.

But humanists' faith can be mighty difficult, whether they are religious or secular.

and I try like the very devil to treat them the way I'd like to be treated! People do aggravate me sometimes, but I figure this is probably fair; I'm sure I aggravate people from time to time as well...

22. Then you're not paying proper attention.
As rotten as things are turning in the US, there is so much more going on out there that is good.

If you want to obsess about the US, then look at it this way: Even with the largest power-grab in our history, the carnage they can get away with is probably smaller than ever.

15. Both....or maybe neither.
Let me tell you about my lunch hour today:

I was walking to Millenium Park in Chicago to find a good place to eat lunch and read a book when I passed a homeless dude who was shaking a cup full of change, hoping for a handout. He was wearing a t-shirt that proclaimed "God Bless America". I wondered if he truly felt that he was living in the best country in the world, despite the fact that he is denied health coverage and a decent place to sleep.... I gave him some cash, and didn't particularily care if he spent it on food or on booze or on drugs. Whatever makes his life more bearable, ya know? Fine with me. Still, it reinforced my innate cynacism. Maybe someone gave him that shirt or maybe he was making a patriotic statement or maybe he was being ironic. (or maybe I was just reading too much into the situation...probably the case)

Then I made my way to the Crown Fountain so I could eat my turkey wrap and watch the kids. All kinds of kids, all ages, all races, all laughing and splashing around and having a hell of a good time. Watching them always makes me feel better about everything. Sometimes I take off my shoes and splash around with them. They make me think that may we just might have a chance. Damn kids.

So.... both, I guess.

21. It's dangerous to get to know people too much
because the more you do
you start loving,
or at least getting fond of,
or at least feeling compassion for,
or at least pitying,
or at least not hating with such certainty
even the ones you were sure you hated
most of all. Course
I havent met everybody
but I have had that revolution happen
in my own heart
time & time again
in my own particular life & learning...

34. Depends on my mood...
While I am generally optimistic, I then notice 30-year olds with children laughing with them as they wreak havoc, or walking in acrowd as the idiot children keep dropping things and slowing everyone else up...

I could go on for ages. I'll miss humanity as being a civilized species.

i believe i once had a deep faith in the basic goodness of humanity... age and experience has proved that faith invalid on many counts...

it's not about love or hate anymore, it's about survival... and being able to deal with many facets of the human beast

41. depends on the day
I tend to lean towards love, if only because of our enormous potential, creatively and compassionately.

Then again, it is betraying that potential that leads me to be frustrated with the species. If I succumb to hating, that will ultimately make part of what I (paradoxically) hate about humanity.

So it's very conditional, temperamental, fickle love.
