17. It sure is
Though the cynical side of me tells me we're gonna have a typical AL East finish with the Yanks in first, Sox in second, sigh to see the playoffs again, why couldnt I have been GenX and lived in an era where the Orioles in many cases dominated both the Red Sox and Yankees alike. I still think the Orioles can make the playoffs but the way they play sometimes breaks my heart.

Best I'm hoping for is third for my Yanks, to be honest. They can't keep it together, too streaky.

As a fan, I'm enjoying this. It's competitive and exciting. It sucks for my Yanks, but hey, that's baseball.

26. I know, its just cynicalism
Yankee fans shouldnt be disappointed and act like its the end of the world they if they miss the playoffs, damned bastards have won more series than my guys have won division titles in my life. I want the Orioles to win a world series since theyve never done it in my life and I would love to see it, I would even go to Baltimore for the parade, and above all it would get us a little respect which is something I hardly ever ever see them get. It would also be a really nice irony if they do since one of Mussina's motives for leaving the O's was that he thought he could get a ring in New York. I still miss him as our ace, resent him for leaving but understand its part of baseball.

There's always next year. I'm not that rabid. Dynasties are boring.

For the record, I would like to see the O's go, for Palmeiro. Not so much for Sosa, but an O's title would cap his year off nicely.

54. Thank You
It just gets boring, you guys have been finish first and the Red Sox since 98, and until last year it was the Jays in third place year in and year out too. Sure its great for you guys to always make it but when your fave team hasnt made it since you were 10, you get upset and yes resentful, I have to admit, I attribute my dad for my hating of the Yanks, hes an olde time giants fan and well 1996 with Meier didnt endear me to the Yankees. I jsut want the playoffs either as the division leader or the wild card, doesnt matter who else makes it.

59. I will tell you this
I get mad when both sides of the Yanks-Sox rivlary try to bring politics in to it, like the Sox fans saying the Yankees are like republicans because of their spending habits and greed and the Yanks fans countering by bringing up Schilling. None of that matters to me, I paid attention to sports long before I knew what a democrat and republican was. I dont like the Yanks I Admit but I can respect fans who are true to the team and root for them because they actually believe in teh team and arent some bandwagon jumper.

Schilling can do whatever he wants off the mound, I don't care. I respect him for a player, but I really don't give a damn what he or Jeter thinks about politics. Just play ball.

Baseball's supposed to be one of those things you turn to to escape the real world. Why taint it?

So I get upset when people bring politics in to it. I guess I am hypocritical, Ill like it when I find out my fave players may share my political views but I wont damn them if they dont. I dont like Angelos' owning of the Orioles but outside of baseball, hes a great guy.

I didn't intend for it to go that way. I did bring up the spending habits but immediately people clamored to call Yanks fans Republicans. Hell, if your allegiance to a sports team determined your political affiliation, we'd all be screwed.

80. I dont even hate or dislike Yankee fans in general
I dislike the asses who all they do is brag about 26 championships blah blah. Yank fans arent bad people, many of them are just like you and me, people rooting for their hometown team, and I respect that. I hate the Yankees a lot, believe me but I believe if I had been brought up in NY or Jersey, I would be a fan and if my dad had been a fan. I dont see the need to bring politics in to it, hate the Yankees because they break your team's heart, or are your rival, or have something like Meier happen to you.

72. You know, one of the main reasons I don't like the Yanks is this...
I don't like their style of ball. And that goes for every big ball club. I like Twins baseball. I like the strategy of hit, bunt, single, RUN. I like manufactured run scoring. Of course, I would be crazy to say that I don't wish the Twins had at least ONE big bat (which they don't), but I don't enjoy a game of homers and doubles. It's boring.

We have nobody. They havne't had a person hit over 30 homers since Kent Hrbeck. That's pretty sad.

We do have Justin Morneau. I think he'll hit 40 in a year sooner or later, but right now, in his first full season in the majors, he's struggling badly.

EDIT to spell Hrbeck

Amazing with the glove. Bats right around .280. Can steal bases and leg out doubles. But he only has like 120 or so carreer home runs. He hasn't hit more than 24 EVER in a season.

When I say "big bat", I'm talking like, lets see...........DAVID ORTIZ!!!!!

Damn you Big Poppee, why weren't you dominant like that when you played for us? He was an allright player with us, now you can't pitch to him.

I was wrong before. He hasn't hit over 29 in his carreer, not 24.

Needless to say, he shouldn't have been in the derby, he only hit 3 dingers.

He did rob Bonds of homer in that game though, my favorite all star moment.

19. The Yankees are awesome.
Not because I actually want them to win for their own sake, as they normally beat the hell out of my favorite team, but I love it when they humble all the jealous fans (like the ones posting in this thread for example). EVERY team in baseball would be the Yankees if they could afford it. That's why I wasn't overcome by the "magic" of the Red Sox overcoming their "curse": give a ridiculously high-payroll team enough chances and they'll eventually lay the golden egg. To heck with all the baseball fans who hate the Yankees because they're jealous of how the Yankees are just that much better at winning in baseball's insane system of overpaid players. :)

They're paying him what you pay a Cy Young Award Winner in his prime not a former Cy Young Winner at the end of his career, Nolan Ryan pitched till he was 46 but he wasnt winning 20 games, thats what I hate about the Yankees that they do shit like this, it just smacks of arrogance.

Of course he'll go to whomever is going to pay him the most money. The question asked is why the Yanks would offer an aging strikeout pitcher, who has lost some of his strikeout ability, that much money when they could go after young pitching instead.

I wish I could say that he's getting old school talent to fill the gaps while he's courting young 2-3 year players, but this season doesn't even resemble that. Who knows. Gordon and Rivera aren't going to be able to bail his all-stars out forever.

And I say that because they didn't get anything for the short run. And that's how Yankee baseball is run. Small ball clubs would have demanded TONS of prospect minor leaguers and an immediate contributor instead of a potential superstar. But that's how the Yanks work, and this time they got beat.

96. Not sure. Probably depressing from playing with Seattle.
He was unstoppable with the Mariners in 2001 and 2003. He hit 37 homers in 2001.

He's lost his confidence I think. He's a career .270 hitter and averages over 20 homers so you KNOW the guy can hit, and he's won the gold glove umpteen times, so you know he's good on D.

Maybe the change of scenery will help him... he did get two RBI's last night on two singles with men on. Maybe he'll come around.

Sad part is this, even with his .235 average, 7 homers and 30 RBI's, he's outhitting the other options at second for the twins.

Yankees fans live in the past; all that matters is the present. presently, the Yankees are 1.5 out of first. Frankly, I don't give a shit what happened 80 some fucking years ago in sports history, my parents were even a twinkle in their parents eyes. Let's go Red Sox!

75. BoSox fans obsess for 80+ years over "The Curse of the Bambino"
but you don't give a shit about what happened 80 years ago?

Well, I'd say that's progress! :)

As far as Yankee fans living in the past - that's easy to do when the past and present are so glorious. Unlike other major sports franchises (think the Cleveland Browns) the Yankees have continued to deliver over the length of their existence. Living in the past as a Yankees fan is an assurance that the past will become the present, rather than a longing for long-gone-and-never-to-return glory years.

As far as the Yankees being 1.5 games out of first in JULY, I seem to remember a year where they were 14 games out a little closer to the end of the season. Can you say "Bucky Dent?"

Let's see if the BoSox can repeat this year, or even in the next 5 years. I'll give them props if they do, but one WS win in 83 years does not a dynasty make.

Why demean only the Yankees? Do the majority of bb players look like the unkempt Damon, or do they look like the Stepford Yankees? I'd guess that 90% of MLB players have adopted the clean cut look that you seem to think makes them automatons.

And what's creative about looking like an Australian's nightmare?

As far as the Yankee dress code, I doubt that any of them are complaining about keeping trimmed when they're being paid those obscene salaries. Maybe George gives them the option: dress code and big salary, or "creative" appearance at league minimum.

119. They suck?
26 World Series later...

If "sucking" gets you to be within 1.5 games of the leader in the AL East, then sucking works just fine and dandy for the Yankees.

"I always knew growing up that I was gonna play professional baseball. I mean, thats all I ever talked about. The most important thing is, I want to be remembered for being a Yankee. You either love us or hate us. I love playing at home in Yankee Stadium in front of the greatest fans in the world but I also love going on the road and people booing us and hating us. The bottom line is... when you compete, you wanna win. I live for this." - Derek Jeter

143. HEY! Just another HALO VICTORY last night, and not a word of it
in this thread?!

Why do I crow? Because THE HALOS BEAT THE YANKEES LAST NIGHT. In fabulous fashion, I might add.

Give my boys their due, people! O8)
