Just my thought for the day.

When I hear it used outside of the Tour de France I find it incredibly pompous

Peloton A densely packed group of riders, sheltering in each others' draft. In a mass-start race, most of the competitors usually end up in one large peloton for most of the race. The word is French, from a term that means rolled up in a ball...a related word, peloter, means to caress sensually, cuddle.
I guess the French have a word for everything. I wonder what they call a circle-jerk?

But frankly, outside of a road race it has no meaning.
"I managed to stay in the peloton during the club ride today" is just TOO "Style Man"...

all of the people who make up Bush's Brain, Bush's Mouth, Bush's Legs, Bush's Puppet Strings etc. etc. etc. -- they are a peloton of people.
