It's the Friday evening "What are you listening to" thread
I am listening to Earlimart's "Everyone Down Here" cd. I will follow that with their new cd "Treble and Tremble".

I'm in the mood to hear them because they're opening for Son Volt and I just bought my ticket to the show on Sept. 16! :bounce:

4. I've been listening to The Hold Steady's "Your Little Hoodrat Friend" over
and over. Saw them on Conan the other night and thought they were great. Song is free .mp3 on their site. Gonna get their albums now!

http://theholdsteady.com/mp3.html

Your Little Hoodrat Friend

yr little hoodrat friend makes me sick but after i get sick i just get sad. because it burns being broke and it hurts to be heartbroken but always being both must be a drag. she's been calling me again. she's been calling me again.
yr little hoodrat friend's been calling me again. and i can't stand all the things that she sticks into her skin. like sharpened ballpoint pens. and steel guitar strings. she says it hurts. but it's worth it. tiny little text etched into her neck it said "jesus lived and died for all your sins." she's got blue black ink and it's scratched into her lower back. it said: "damn right i'll rise again." yeah, damn right you'll rise again.

i've been dusted in the dark up in penetration park. i've been plastered. i've been shaking hard and searching in a dirty storefront church. i've been plowed. but i ain't ever been with your little hoodrat friend. what makes you think i'm getting with your little hoodrat friend?

10. "Blonde On Blonde"
One of my absolute favorite albums, which I have neglected for too many months...ahhhh...

Grandpa died last week
And now he's buried in the rocks
Everyone was talking 'bout
How badly they was shocked
But me, I expected it to happen
I knew he lost control
When he built a fire on Main Street
And shot it full of holes...

"I want a pistol
I want a gun
I`m scared baby
I wanna run
This world`s crazy
Give me the gun

Baby, baby
Ain`t it true
I`m immortal
When I `m with you
But I want a pistol
In my hand
I wanna go to
A different land

I walk on concrete
I walk on sand
But I can`t find
A safe place to stand
I`m scared baby
I wanna run
This world`s crazy
Gimme the gun"

19. Yeah, I'm into the tail end of it now
into the Comsat Angels stuff-- fairly mellowish 80s alt-pop from Sheffield. Best known as the band who had that one song in the movie "Real Genius" and who get namechecked all the time, but who nobody seems to listen to....

Had to listen to the Stooges earlier though.... the perfect antidote to breaking something when your ex-wife pisses you off!!! :o

Listening to "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel right now. My listening habits vary a lot, though. Don't stick to one genre. Been on a bit of an indie rock kick lately. Lot of Death Cab and Trail of Dead, Interpol, etc.

I am listening to the cd of my band's music..

We have our first practice with the whole band on Sunday, and I have to be ready..We ended up recording everything in parts BEFORE we had the drummer, and before I met the keyboardist.

I've been told I'm supposed to be promoting also, so if anyone wants to check out what we have on myspace, it is at www.myspace.com/avenueinoceania or you can check at www.avenueinoceania.com .

I guess I've done my part here.

I'll probably listen to Chameleons, Strange Times after that.

"Tapestry" has also been in heavy rotation at my place. I'm working up a version of "It's Too Late" for an acoustic set I plan to do at a neighborhood coffee shop. Thankfully it translates very well to solo guitar + voice.

She is one of the all-time great songwriters, IMHO. :D

Just to consolidate threads. I've been able to listen to a lot this weekend.

Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous

Teenage Fanclub - Man-Made

Marion Raven - Here I Am

Mary Gauthier - Mercy Now

All American Rejects - Move Along

Marc Pont - No Time Like The Present

All great! Except for the Marc Pont, that is. The last 5 are new acquisitions. Teenage Fanclub reminds me of the Byrds, who are among my favorites. I admit that I miss Marion's M2M pop sensibilities a little, but Here I Am is a very smooth transition into rock. I can't really complain. Mary Gauthier is like the Patti Smith of country, and the All American Rejects have punk-pop that sets them with the best artists in the genre. Vocally, AAR are a bit in the pack, but that's pretty minor. I only liked a few songs on the Marc Pont, with a couple, like "Gimme Some Love" and "Hasta La Vista," being really bad. At least this CD came free from CDBaby.com with the purchase of Tuuli's Here We Go.

58. I just got back from Lollapalooza
My ears are still ringing and I am hearing the Pixies doing a Jesus and Mary Chain cover in my head. Brian Jonestown and The Warlocks were both great, The Black Keys were a big surprise, the Kaiser Chiefs are going to be BIG, Primus were really, really good, Liz Phair and Billy Idol were both laughable from the snatches I heard, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead were very drunk and a lot of fun, I really liked Blonde Redhead, and I will never get those lightweights Weezer.

I felt bad for the Walkmen; they came on at the same time as the Pixies and I can just picture their audience: 8 guys so fucked up they thought they were at the Pixies stage. "YO, DO HERE COMES YOUR MAN, DUUUUUUDE!"

Congrats to the organizers. It went off perfectly, great crowd (Van Warped was in town too, so the skater kids were elsewhere), food and drinks were fairly priced ($5 for a beer, $3 for a 24 oz. vitamin water or a 20 oz. coke), and apart from the 95 temp, helped by a bit of rain just before the Black Keys, the place was pretty perfect.

Brian Jonestown Massacre ruled, despite having an obsessive/compulsive leader. Seriously, Anton is brilliant, but he has OCD BAD. It's like he can't bear to start a song, has to retune every string, talk with his buddies offstage, fool around with the synthesizer, wrap and unwrap the mic cord (even though he had two cordless mics to use), etc. But the set was brilliant if chaotic.
