Do you want to live in luxury?
Really, do you desire these things, like a big mansion, nice cars, a boat, loads of cash, not having to work? Honestly, do you?

28. I am so hot for the 2005 Mustangs
I am thinking about a second job just to get one and I have a child I don't get to see as often as I want and he LIVES with me.

I am female and my b/f laughs at me because I actually rotate my whole head and look at them with lustful abandon.

I hate to covet... but, damn, they make my... well, I'm not gonna say what they make me do. It's the only redneck thing about me - mmmmmm.

5. I used to...
When I was younger. And then I lived in poverty for awhile, on welfare, going to the foodbank. All that good stuff. I learned to appreciate life and the little things fairly quickly.

6. Not really. I think those things become entanglements.
I can get by with a whole lot less than that.

Although...not working sounds nice. :D

7. No.
Not in the least. Ostentatious display is disgusting and I'm more of a minimalist.

If I had boatloads of money, I'd be kept busy deciding where best to use it to help people, probably developing sustainable eco-villages, along with agricultural and health programs.

8. I DO live in luxury....
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 10:33 PM by mike_c
I eat whenever I'm hungry. I use ten times as many resources as most other people in the world, and 100 times as much as many. I live in a comfortable house, in a quite town, where no one shoots at anyone else. I have clean water to drink, and good beer when I want it. I am healthy, and when I get sick I have access to better health care than most of the world's people. I live with pets that I love, and never have to worry about needing to eat them someday. I could go on at length, but I'm sure you get my drift. I'm one of the luckiest people on the face of the earth. If that's not luxury, I don't know what is.

11. Well said!
I think most of us don't look at it that way, but we should. We already have an embarrassment of riches and don't even appreciate it.

26. Mike C., you got it right. Just to have clean drinking water would
be considered a luxury to many people in this world.

I feel so lucky to have a roof over my head, a job I like, food to eat and most important, a healthy and happy family.

12. I already have what most people would consider a life of
luxury (I'm not going to provide details) except for the boat part and the not having to work part. (Though I don't actually have to work all that hard compared to some other people.)

But you know what? None of it really matters. Mrs R. and I have been bone-poor in the past, and if it happens that we become so again, so be it. It wouldn't bother us that much.

Things don't mean a thing. People do.

17. To me
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 11:22 PM by hyphenate
luxury means not having to worry about money, eating whatever I want when I want it, having enough space to move around, a car that doesn't need some facet of repair on a continual basis, the ability to travel if I want or need to, the chance to help out my mom and other family members if the need arises, someone to take care of the furkits when I need to get away, to be able to pursue my hobbies without the worry about how much something is going to cost, and enough to have a future that is secure enough to let me live like this for the rest of my life. I don't know how much all of that would cost, but that's what I would consider "luxury." I don't need so much that it is ridiculous, nor do I feel like buying $8000 shower curtains. (on edit: it was $6000 (Dennis Koslowski))

20. I'll take the loads of cash...
...but the only stuff I want besides that is a nice house with some land, a dependable car with not-too-crazy gas mileage, a WiFi laptop with Pentium M or its AMD equivalent, and a comfy kitchen for our cats to fall asleep in.

21. I wouldn't waste money on all the toys and baubles.
But not having to work and not having to worry about how to pay the bills does have its appeal. Coming from a person who's felt screwed at every job he's had, wealth would be my way of saying "up yours" to those that told me no.

"We spend our lives wirking jobs we hate to buy shit we don't need" - Tyler Durden

Having had it all; Jag convertible, country home and downtown condo, huge RRSPs, etc, and losing it all, I've come to realise it's not all that.

The real challenge is finding something satisfying to fill the void created when we give up the consumerist ratrace.

One more Durden:

"It's only when we've lost everything that we're free to do anything".

Yeah, I have Fight Club tattooed all over my body.

24. Well, to be completely honest, I already have most of those things...
No boat, though...But even though it's all nice, it doesn't rule me. I'm also retired now and I don't have to worry about money. Not too much anyhow. I am a very happy person, most of the time.

But my possessions are not the things at the top of the list of things that make me happy. I mean, they are on the list, but what REALLY makes me happy are my family and friends, both the "real" ones, and all of you here on DU. I'm also made happy by the fact that I can donate my time and funds to the political causes that are so important to me.

Some folks might say I'm rich...but I don't live as though I am. I am content to work for liberal causes and for the many underdogs in our society.

I must be tired; I don't feel as though I'm making much sense. Feel free to question me!

:hi:

27. Comfort is preferable to luxury.
My needs are relatively simple, anyway; I'm not very materialistic. All I need is a roof over my head, space for all my books, a computer with an Internet connection, functional transportation (I wouldn't mind a decent sports car, but that's because I love to drive fast on twisty roads, not because I want to impress anyone).

Too many people allow their possessions to possess them...not a good way to be.

I don't need a mansion as a regular house will do. If I want to go boating I can rent one for a day. I would like to have loads of cash so I could give huge donations to charities and other worthy causes, whereas nitwits like Paris Hilton just throw their money away on diamonds, overpriced clothes and other vapid junk.
